Why the move to Group III?

Here's some CAS I've gathered over the past couple of years. It's not the most current data, but most of it is probably good.

PAO's (Group 4 oils): 68649-12-7, 68037-01-4, 163149-29-9, 151006-63-2, 151006-62-1, 151006-60-9. VII's of +155 or greater.

Diester (Group 5 oils): 28472-97-1; VII's average +170.

Viscosity Index Copolymers - 127883-08-3

Additives:
ZDDP Type Adds: 68649-42-3, XXXXX-46-6.

XHVI is made from pure petroleum slack wax and its CAS number is 92026-09-4
The CAS number for the more typical all-hydroprocessed Group III base oils is 64742-54-7
The CAS number for PAO is 68037-01-4

Judging from the evidence at the other post where a guy tested various Mobil 1 oils (different viscosities) there is evidence of Group III oil in the formulation. Is this a good thing or a bad thing? I remember when Mobil 1 first came out there was some mineral oil as a additive carrier. But according to the testing there is more mineral oil than would account for carrier oil. It may not even be a bad thing and maybe for whatever reasons the oil has to be formulated that way. But let us assume for a moment that Mobil 1 has as much Group III as say, Chevron synthetic. You can probably get the Chevron synthetic a lot cheaper. However, I do not think the Chevron has as low a pour point as the Mobil 1.

More testing needs to be done. If possible we need to find out how much mineral oil is in Mobil 1 and also test at what temperature Mobil 1 flows in the cold. And remember, the courts ruled already that Castrol could call its synthetic oil a synthetic oil even with a Group III base.

Still, it is surprising to me if it turns out Mobil 1 has a lot of Group III. If the percentage of Group III is comparable to other synthetic oils that cost less than maybe there should be a price reduction of the Mobil 1.

Seeing Exxon and Esso are the same company, I might buy a load of the stuff and stock pile it before this oil get's the group 3 downgrade as well.

I think I'll just climb up on a rock in the middle of the stream & sit down & wait for more info on this Mobil 1 Extended Performance switch to Grp III issue.

Course, Mobil 1 Extended Performance suddenly became both SM & GF-4 during early 2006 and I just wonder if this could be a reason for switching base oils.

Regardless, I'm taking the "wait & see" attitude.

Not too hijack the thread, but I am a firm believer that the entire blended package, additives and base oil, is far more important than just putting too much attention solely on the base oil. With the advent of the latest specifications, the gap between syn and conventional has narrowed to next to nothing, and the only thing that separates performance is the additive package.
I was a group III believer well before any of the hype, because grp IV has no advantages in PCMO's.

I really think given these recent events, if Syntec would drop their price to under $4.50/qt, they would make a killing. I'd love to use Syntec. It has shown great results.

With Pennzoil Platinum selling for such a great price ($2 per quart for instance) I'm surprised anyone would even bother using a conventional oil (unless they got it for 50 cents a quart!) Especially when it's got the Terry Dyson seal of approval. If he likes an oil, you know that it's because he's seen it perform well on many of the used oil analysis he's viewing.

I would even say you can get a Synthetic for qt (USA) if you go with Quaker State Torque Power. Same family as PP (SOPUS) & all we need is a used oil analysis verification (which I am going to do in the near future).

Just called our local Advance Auto. They have plenty of the pennzoil Platinum 5w30 at the 2 for 1 price. I plan to buy all they have, up to a point.
Even if it's group III, that's a great price.
If Terry recommends it, I'm sold.

Nowhere in Canada, unfortunately, but since most of the readers here are in the US, and that's where the $2 deals are, that's why I posted it.

I did see PP selling at CT a couple of weeks ago for only $4.59 a quart though. A lot better than the $8-9 price they sell most synthetics for!

Just got back from Advance Auto. Bought 20 quarts of Pennzoil Platinum (all they had). They get another truck in on Saturday. Plan to buy 26 more quarts then. that will keep in oil for 2 1/2 years. The 2 for 1 sale goes till the end of November. Comes out to $2.89 a quart.
Not bad considering that Havoline at Walmart is up to $2.16 a quart.
Can't beat this deal with a stick.

But we see the people running $1 a quart oil 4-5k with no problems.

We also see people running the $2 quart the same time frame. In fact, we don't see much Pennzoil Platinum used oil analysis over 5-6k.

You'd need to run the $2 oil twice the OCI to get the same value.

I agree that 50 cent oil is the best deal.

Most of my stash is at the price or 69 cents.

No one is running their $2 quart of PP 20k miles.

Thats how far you'd have to run it to get the same value.

Unless you have a Corvette.. (I am jealous!)

and have to run syn... (and yes, if I had a Corvette, I'd run Syn. It would be the lower cost oil that protected the engine. With Terrys blessing of course)

Advance Auto also have the 2 for 1 sale for the Quaker State Q Advanced synthetic oil. What's everyone opinion on the quality of the Q Advanced Quaker State synthetic oil. I pick up 8 quarts for the price of 4. It came out to be $2.84 per quart after the 2 for 1 sale. Is Q Advanced a good group III oil?
