Why the big push to eliminate ICEs?

By the way, as much as I like the high-performance, high-power vehicles some automakers are offering now, I don't think they're doing themselves any favors by offering 200+ mph supercars and 800-hp sedans. Clearly these cars are a last gasp before EVs replace ICEs, but bureaucrats and environmentalists notice them too, and will use them as reasons to tighten the screws even more. The optics are bad.

Until recently we were the largest producers of crude/gas. We don't need the Saudis, and I'm all for producing ALL forms of energy we can, not just renewables...
Right but oil is priced off global rather than domestic demand which means global supply disruptions still have influence on the prices we pay in the US. We're just lucky that oil is predominantly priced in USD as it makes it cheaper for US citizens.

Price controls don't work either. We've already been down that road once before.

I doubt they care about the minutiae, it's the overall numbers that matter and I doubt those cars are made in numbers that make any significant difference. Besides, high end EVs are going to make those look silly.

Of course you have to trust those in power on such matters, and after all my many years on this Earth, and while I'm no genius, I do have a lot of
horse sense and logic, I do NOT trust them at all, and on more than one occasion they have in the very least been deceptive or mislead the general public.

Kinda like when an automaker says oil consumption of 1L/1k miles is "normal"

Thanks, I can look it up, like this. Just asking the person if they have some reference.

https://www.eia.gov/energyexplained...qual to about 35% of total petroleum exports.

Starting in about 2008 we really were on an upturn in oil production which pretty much continued on until 2020. Which seems to coincide with the drop in consumption.
Here's another one to look up.
https://www.macrotrends.net/1369/crude-oil-price-history-chart

The troubles for US oil producers actually started in late 2014 when oil prices collapsed from $120/ bbl to $40 /bbl. Drillers in the US took a pause but got started drilling again in a low price environment and basically the price did not come back and the producers got mired in debt. The 2020 Covid event caused the drop in consumption to the point that crude oil actually traded at a negative value for the few days. It has since recovered to $67 which is encouraging some drilling but not much.

I’d guess those will be the first first ICE cars to die. Deliveries of the Tesla Model S Plaid start June 10th. ~1,100 HP, 0-60 in 2.0 sec. 1/4 mile in 9.3 sec. With a much faster version coming in 1 year.

ICE cars can’t compete with that, and manufacturers know it. BMW M cars, Mercedes AMGs, Cadillac V, etc. will all be electrified before long. Porsche figured it out with Taycan and they’re never turning back.

It is true that Teslas are a flat out blast to drive. When we take people out for a spin in our Mid Range Model 3, they say, "Wow! Is this the fast one? "I tell them, "No, it is the slow one."

But to cross out all the incredible cars in the world, if it happens, will take a loooong time.
Could you imagine a hybrid Corvette? OMG....

Most people never understood the difference between power and torque, or power bands, or oversteer vs understeer. This is why they need some bragging right to sell their brands and models.

Without these bragging right who would pay $50k for any vehicles? We would all be driving Siennas or Rav4s, or Prius or Chevy Volts.

Here is a simple graph of net petroleum imports which is petroleum imports minus exports. You can see clearly when the USA became a net exporter of refined products and natural gas liquids. The USA has not been a net exporter of crude oil for many, many years, at least not since before the 1970’s, even with some exports of crude oil in the last few years. Also shown are the top destinations where the exported petroleum is going.

There's no way big brother will allow cars that fast in the hands of the general public...with the idiot drivers we have terrorizing the roadways these days, people will be dying faster than fruit flies...

ANY car with the word "hybrid" or "electric" attached to it just screams geek-mobile....

Pretty sure there are some pretty fast cars out there already. Usually the price tag deters most though.

Works for me, but I'm an electrical engineer, I'm ok with such a label. Wife is ok too, her license plate is a chemical formula for an acid no less, 3 guesses as to her background.

This will end up in courts for years...its one thing for CA to regulate its own emissions - which was curbed by Trump - its another story to ban the sale of gas cars. IIRC, CA doesn't have the right to regulate interstate commerce

Wait until there are more of these ridiculously fast cars on the roads and people starting dying in droves...big brother will eventually put the clamps down on these vehicles...unless someone can come up with a viable reason the general public needs to have cars that'll do 200 MPH and 9 second 1/4 miles...

Big Brother already has speed limits and highway patrols. We call it living in a civilization. It is ridiculous though, the speed wars. I wonder what it does to the brain to accelerate to 171 in 8.6 seconds? Nothing good. Not for me. 0-60 in 15 seconds is plenty fast, even that is a ??? Back to why we have cars in the first place.

Bet you were upset when they added radios to cars too.

Big Brother could make laws that say there must be an acceleration (and top speed) governor on the vehicle to only allow it to go from 0-60 in 10 seconds with the pedal to the floor, and not be able to over a max speed for top end restriction.:(

Might as well just put in super small motors into vehicles so you can go farther on a gallon of gas of a KWH of power, and can't accelerate very fast or have much top speed. Just like a horse and carriage ... you'd get there eventually. 😄
