Why say net torque over HP?

Have you ever noticed they are starting to rate engines in torque instead of HP? Torque makes more sense except when building things like generators where HP makes more sense. Overall I like when engines state their abilities in HP because I am used to it.

I agree completely. some engines also now list cc's - which is of little use until you become accustomed to that measurement for small equipment.

N generators they do rate in hp. In lanmowers they use torque because peak hp is at 3600rpm and in practice they are never run that speed for safety (blade tip speed) and fuel economy/emissions purposes. They usually run 2000-2800 depending on blade size

B&S got sued in a class action over the HP ratings. Horsepower depends on the engine RPM and it was alleged that some HP ratings were based upon unattainable RPM's. One OPE supplier would have one HP rating and another would have a higher rating, both using the same engine.

That figures, some nut job/jobs makes another frivolous law suit, and wins.

I don't like it. The measure of HP is the "ability to do work". Plain and simple. Because the 6HP engine won't develop 6HP when run at a lower RPM is not the fault of the engine manufacturer.

They have been doing this for the last 2-3 years.

Yep,so we all know its not going to change back. Just like when we went from Cubic inches,to Liter`s.

I wish they would show the HP vs. Torque curve if they are going to state or show anything at all, and state the average rpm it will be running at.

Because in small equipment all that matters is torque! Too many lawsuits over HP.

Example, 190cc engine=8.75 lbs,(2000rmp).

Horsepower of 7 hp will not come into play until 3600rpm. Most small engine run at 3000 rpm. which developes about 80% of stated horsepower, 5.5 Hp. There is a formula online for this.

I think the torque they are stating is the free running torque, in lb.ft. to maintain the blade at say a governed rpm of 3,000 rpm.

Actually - I think it is all that matters in car engines as well. Peak HP is something I will probably rarely experience.

Tell me what the torque curve looks like between 1500 and 4000 rpm to demonstrate the driveability of a car.
