Why not Valvoline Restore and Protect for average Joe OCIs?

you do have a point actually. Subaru cars are now everywhere, and they are i the attainable price point. So their engines are quite common onhe street.
But, they don't strike me average when it comes to their demand from oil.
Non-turbo EJs are actually notoriously gentle on oil; they’ve got timing belts and shim-under-bucket OHC tappets. Non-turbo FA’s and all FBs currently (and the EZ/ER also) are roughly in the same boat… run any 5w30 and change it @6k or less and they’ll all be happy.

If I were running any shelf-stock oil in a turbo Subaru, I would probably follow the 3.75k severe service schedule. That will easily make it on par with other results, unless you’re tracking it, then I would probably replace shelf oil at least every two events or immediately after the event if the oil temp exceeds 280*F.

If we’re talking about the “average Joe” than it will all be about pricing. If the Valvoline Restore and Protect is a dollar more than the supertech, the supertech wins. Reality is, with Walmart pricing, the Valvoline Restore and Protect is $11-$12 more. That’s big money for the average Joe. Supertech wins nearly every time. Has nothing to do with cleaning ability, etc.

I’m talking average Joe here, not BITOG members. We’re decidedly NOT average Joe. :)

I'm in Canada bro. Not paying $60 for 5L of Valvoline Restore and Protect when I can get 15L of Mobil 1 0W-40 to my door for $115 CAD all in...
CT had Valvoline Restore and Protect on for $43 / 5L and Walmart has been close at $44 so now I'm the Valvoline Restore and Protect train. $38 / 5L for 0w40 would certainly be enticing though.

I got 3 jugs of Mobil 1 0W-40 delivered to my door for $115 CAD all in from Walmart.

No brainer. I don't care about the cleaning, I care about protection and approvals. I think it's a superior product for less. My money my decision.

And again just to be clear, this is not aimed at extended OCI guys, track cars, or people dead set on a certain oil for subjective reasons. For the average driver doing normal oil changes, Valvoline Restore and Protect just makes sense.
Average Joe doesn't like expensive oils and Valvoline Restore and Protect currently is priced above the average price for OTS full synth. oils.

I don't see a downside to using Valvoline Restore and Protect exclusively, at least with normal driving and regular OCI's. I'm using it in all 4 of my vehicles and will continue to do so unless something else comes along at a competitive price point and proves to be a more well rounded product. But as it stands Valvoline Restore and Protect cleans, keeps everything clean and has shown to have very good wear protection in many used oil analysis. What's not to like???

I do 7-8 oil changes total per year between all 4 of my vehicles, nothing over 5k OCI's. However the Subaru Ascent goes no more than 4k OCI's due to the FA24DIT's innate ability to dilute the oil with fuel. In the Subaru I don't see any advantage to spending more on Amsoil or HPL since oil can't fix fuel dilution and extending OCI's doesn't make sense. Since I typically use higher end OTS oils anyways, Valvoline Restore and Protect might only cost me $30-$40 more per year with that many oil changes. That is worth it to me to clean potential contaminates left by previous oils and to maintain the cleanliness of the rings, turbo/VCT screen filters and other internal parts over the long haul. Especially since the F150 and Ascent are turbo charged direct injected engines. My 91 MR2 has reduced oil consumption by at least half in just two 3k-ish mile OCI's, that about my typical annual mileage on that car. If it was available for my motorcycle, I'd try it in that too.

What do you want in your crankcase, the factory fill for a GT2 RS or an ILSAC oil that'll clean the crud out of a maltreated oil burning toilet that's been fed a steady diet of 7-11 top up oils?

You could use it,but depends driving style. Stop n go traffic oil is likely black 3,000 miles and prob fuel dilution and sheerd.
Drive highway miles 20,000 no prob..unlikely today's highways.
Oil filter be filled by 3000 miles today's populated highways, itself often stop n go
Restore will clean,as advertised...
Most other oils out their don't desludge clean old stuff in engine.like restore, mobil extend guard, redline synthetic, amsoil synthetic..thier esters ..

Is this with the Valvoline Restore and Protect and Valvoline Euro you were blending together, or are you now using straigth Valvoline Restore and Protect?

From your post a couple months ago:
Yep, it's in my Mercedes right now, PLUS 1.5 quarts of Valvoline Restore and Protect.
No, I'm still running that mixture. The results above were from removing about 1.5 quarts of Castrol Euro 5W-40 and replacing it with Valvoline Restore and Protect 5w30. After that I ran it for about 2 weeks (pretty hard) before changing the oil and posting the filter pics here.

I should have results of the new mix in about a month, since I can remove the filter from above on this car without spilling any oil.

Who knows, it may not show any additional cleaning, but that's what experiments are for.

That car has just rolled over 101,000 miles and has had at least 25 oil changes.
I found paperwork for 6 oil changes and the longest one was 4,400 miles.
Not doubting the maintenance history. I was simply stating that you can have an engine that looks clean as can be under the valve cover and still have sticky/carboned rings and grooves. Can never be 100% sure unless you can inspect them.

Side note on the 25 oil changes. Makes me wonder how may oil changes I've actually done over my lifetime on my vehicles lol

Maybe. Maybe not. If there's no oil consumption occurring then what's the problem?

" My 91 MR2 has reduced oil consumption by at least half in just two 3k-ish mile OCI's"
How much oil consumption reduction was there in volume? What was measured? Thanks

Valvoline Restore and Protect seems to be flying off the shelves at Walmarts around me. Sometimes sold out or actively being restocked on the shelves while I shop. Seems to be doing just fine with the masses.

In metro Atlanta GA area, often no 5w-30 on the shelves. I was able to order from Walmart.com and shipped to home for free. :)
