why no fram ultra 8873

That's a good question. I don't work for Fram, but I'm sure there's got to be some kind of reason behind it.

Having said that, a little digging tells me that the 9100 line is basically the larger equivalent to that filter (1qt capacity compared to 1/2qt for the 8873), and Fram does make an Ultra in the 9100:

I don't know if the bigger/longer filter will fit for your application, but it might be worth considering.

thanks, i've been looking for a longer version in the ultra that i could sub....

it's a 496 big block or the 8.1 liter gas engine.

also, not sure I can get a longer filter in there, this is a 4X4 and the front drive shaft is right close...

i'm thinking a royal purple 10-454 oil filter for extended oil interval.

Well, as far as I can tell, RP filters are basically just re-branded Fram Ultras.. At least the few I've seen cut open.

A bit more pricey, sure, but if it is a FU with a different paint job, then it would be a good filter.

thought champ labs made RP oil filters.

fram gets a "come on man"...make the ultra 8873.

SirTanon, if i could get the ultra xg9100 in that space in the truck, i would try it except for and my concern for the relief valve setting thingy.

ph8873 has none while the
ultra xg9100 has a 9-15 psi

thanks nate.
my bad(memory!). anyhow, isn't royal purple filter supposed to be slightly better than mobil1 and k&n synthetic media fitlers?

they don't make an ultra 8873 and i can't get my question answered whether the relief valve setting on the xg9100 of 9-15 psi would be a bad thing, when the ph8873 has no relief valve setting, so that i could try a larger filter

therefore i am left with the standard size royal purple as my only choice, as i perceive it to be better than the k&n and the mobile 1 synthetics.
