If it is that close between the parked vehicle and the one driving by I personally wouldn't try and walk through. I would wait for the car to go past. I would worry about being hit by the moving vehicle if it was that close. I also don't like to get super close to other people's vehicles. I don't like it when people walk by mine and touch it or let their purse, bags, etc... hit it so I try and return the favor.

Yes, I have banged my shin on a ball mount. My own while putting stuff in/getting stuff out of the bed of my truck or cargo area of the SUV. No, I have never walked into a ball mount in a parking lot. Not even at night( I don't see why that matters - you can still see the ball mount in the dark ). I watch where I am going.

It isn't about being perfect. It is about having some personal responsibility for your own actions. If I ever do walk into a ball mount in a parking lot it will be on ME not the vehicle owner.

I think I explained myself well enough in my last post. And it does seem that since that post there have been some who agree as well. You can come down off your pedestal now.

Really. I am on the pedestal? Ok.

Let's be clear here I am not whining because I did something stupid and want to blame other people for it. I am asking people to be accountable for their own actions. Not sre how that is me up on a pedestal?

Or folks aren't expecting their utility trailer to go missing while they are in the parking lot, but it happens. There are valid reasons for locking a trailer hitch and trailer, especially a small, easily stolen one.

If you live out in the country with big open parking spaces and lots of room hitch's are just a minor annoyance. In a city or in a tight parking garage they suck. I couldn't fit my truck between a parked extended cab and another vehicle the other day because the *(*)&(^&Y extended cab truck had his big freaken pintle hitch sticking a foot off the backside.

For those of use who live in cities with tight parking garages not really designed for trucks, and tight parallel parking spots and lots of pedestrians they are a liability.

Taking them off when not in use is common courtesy, which sadly isn't common these days.

From anyone it seems.

This topic has officially crossed into the absurd.

This is my hitch pin. It is a combo locking/anti rattle model. I am not taking it off until I know I won't need the ball mount for at least 3-4 weeks. Just too much hassle. I am also not using a regular slide in pin either and have my trailer stolen while I am out in the boat which has happened numerous times in this area to the duck hunters and fishermen. I was with a guy hunting and we came back and found his trailer gone. They just took out the standard hitch pin, slid the ball mount into their hitch( he foolishly locked the coupler but not the ball mount ), and they were gone. My ball mount and trailer coupler have locks!

Maybe the ball and hitches are not BIG enough......if they were bigger maybe people would see them easier?

I walked into one in college one night. It smarted a bit.

Writhing in pain one of my friends a bit buzzed from a night out removed it and threw it into the ditch. Sucks for the owner.

Criminal act. You guys were drinking and impaired, and walked into the guys vehicle, so you throw the guys ball mount away. Nice. Wow.

To the crowd that leaves the ball mount in, in order to "teach the other guy a lesson", I wonder how you'd feel if someone started pulling the mount pin out, to teach you a lesson? Both seem equally ignorant, but I know one will get treated entirely different than the other.

What lesson to is there to be taught by removing the hitch pin? The world is full of self absorbed idiots?

I'm reducing the risk of damage to my vehicle by incompetent people. If they learn a lesson by destroying their radiator or getting a boo boo, that's on them.

Messing with someone else's property because you can't watch where you are going or maintain control of your vehicle is simply inexcusable.

If people would watch where they are going, put down the phone while driving, and not run into me at lights, I wouldn't feel any need to leave the ball mount in.

I suspect the same people who run into other cars at lights because they are playing on their phone are the same ones who get mad about a ball mount sticking out 4". Why they need to be within 4" of my truck is beyond me, let alone their inability to take responsibility for running into an easy to see stationary object.

I guess vandalism is the answer whenever you get upset about something trivial though. Sad.

People like that give me thoughts of a hitch hooked to 20A/240V...

Yes. They have hit other parts of the truck too, but usually it's the back end. All lights work properly and are in OEM housings - no Niteshade here. Usually when I look back in the mirror, they are still holding the phone with that stupid "OMG!" look on their face.

In case you haven't noticed, most people don't give a flying [censored] about their driving.

I actually had someone "tap" my car once, and, come to think of it, I *did* have the drawbar in--and it probably did save some paint. [Don't worry, I took it off while backing up to connect to a trailer.] I had noticed the guy a block prior, and he struck me as... pyscho. I don't remember all of what he did, but I had a vibe that it wasn't quite... innocent inattention. So I ignored it.

Getting on the highway he did some move where he rocketed down the merging lane, cutting over at the last moment, probably cutting someone off--been too long to remember all the details. To this day I think he was intentionally looking for a fight. I had no intention of providing it.

What lesson will a person learn if they rear end a truck with the ball mount in place Vs hitting a truck with out? Like I said, both are ignorant ideas, but one would be defended.

If you leave the ball mount in place to damage someone else's vehicle more, how is that any different than someone pulling the pin? Like I said, both ideas are ignorant, but one would be defended.

If someone else posted that, wouldn't you respond in all caps yelling about how that's assault?

All I see is real aggressive driver's weaving in out in out in and out trying to race to each stop light. I have driven almost 55K miles in the last year due to my job or trips to visit family, so I have seen a lot of driving. There is a percentage of people around here that will talk on there phones and drive which is too much no matter how small the percentage is. But most of the problems I see is male drivers that seem to be attempting to overcompensate for something lacking in their lives with aggressive driving.

It is so entertaining I wish I had some google lenses so I could post everything on youtube or install a dash cam. It would be a hoot.
