why is RTS relatively so much cheaper than other "synthetic" oils? it's about the same price as other brands' premium dino ????

Mainly just marketing, although at $4.34 qt at Walmart it ain't that cheap. The market for the product is largely commercial mixed use fleets. The personal use market is a lot more about perception and emotion.

From my own UOAs, I think it is a great "sleeper" product if you need a 5w-40 CI-4/SL oil. Now that Mobil 1 is said to be largely Group III, RTS is even more relevant. It just doesn't have the pizzaz.

RTS is $18 at my WM and the same as PP. The PP I've bought I paid $2 or less a qt. Its as much as I'd pay for syn group 3 and shows the higher margin the rest are trying to get.

The only other place I've even seen it is Advance Auto Parts and definitely wasn't cheaper than Walmart! It was like $20 something for a gallon.

You can say it's group III bla bla bla till you're red in the face, but Shell's group III base oil is special stuff. I believe RTS uses the same base oil as Shell Helix Ultra. Ferraris are getting group III oil on the assembly line. OH NO!!!

Exactly, people need to give up looking for PP 5W40 and pick up RTS. Basically the same stuff and beefy additives.

brian703, is that a new 9-3 or not. I keep forgetting which you say you have. I know several 9-5 owners with the sludge-affected models who've run it out to 5k with good analyses. So 5k'd probably be fine with an old 9-3. If we're talking new 9-3, given it's such a softy on oil, I'd have no problem.....

My local Wal-Mart has Rotella T Synthetic for $15.97 per gallon. I was looking at it yesterday. I was thinking about buying some of this and trying it. Anyone know how it compares to others like M1 or Syntec.

mine too..

Some WM offer this in quarts ..where it's more expensive. Mine only sells it in gallons at the $15.xx price, while when at WM in Lock Haven (200 miles away) there were the quarts @ $4.XX ( a while back).

The oil is nearly bulletproof. With 2% fuel dilution it was still a solid 40 weight in my jeep 2.5 for 13m/9k. I didn't get the greatest Fe numbers ..but we worked on that.

It's not an oil for just anybody. If you've got an oil beater for an engine, it may just allow you to do sensible OCIs without the fear that accompanies lesser oils with a less robust constitution.

There really aren't too many applications that require a 40 weight these days. If you're able to use a 40 weight and have an operational profile that's going to allow you to get a decent number of miles out of a sensible OCI (closer to 10k then 6k) .fine. If on the otherhand you don't have some distinct need for it ..and you aren't going to tax the inherent properties of it ..then go buy another oil that's more suited to the service. There's no sense packing a howitzer for a postage stamp size target.

I don't know of the true wisdom of it, but I would think that this can exceed most of the demands of most of your Euro alloy in terms of durability. It probably won't make it through all the obstacles that they put in the way (sally left Dallas @ 2pm ..Ted Boston @ 4am ..and Jane ran around a flagpole in Akron three times ..How much does bobby in Tampa weigh?? type stuff) ..but it probably works well.

..but, no matter what, it's a great price for a HDEO synthetic 40 weight. The XHVII proprietary formula is about as good as it gets next to a PAO ...or so I'm led to believe.

Maybe a better question to ask is why are so many oils more expensive than RTS, when RTS is made with high quality Group III basestocks (Which Exxon Mobil now considers a synthetic fluid) and a very robust adiitive pack that meets: API CI-4 PLUS, CI-4, CH-4, CG-4, CF-4, CF, SL, SJ, SH, Cummins CES 20078, 20076, 20071, Mack EO-N Premium Plus ’03, EO-N, EO-M Plus, Volvo VDS 2?

SOPUS is supplying These top Tier Grp III oils to consumers at a reasonable value compared to the compettiton. RTS, For a long time not to menton the PP and QS oils that have been available for some time with some smoking deals for a while now.
Why are Castrol and Mobil 1 synthetics so inflated? Perception of value? That's the consumers folly.

Would you use RTS in a Saab 93 after it goes out of warranty? (It doesn't meet the GM LL specs)

Its on my short list of oils to use in my 04 9-3... however, given that factory fill was good with a relatively light 30wt oil, and GC is an approved GM-LL-025-A oil, Ill be considering that (assuming it still is what it is) when mine is out of warrantee.

I use RTS 5w-40 in my BMW 318i, and havent found much that is better... that said, I just bought many gallons of schaeffer's 5w-40, as a move away from unavailable M1 5w-40 turbodiesel truck, and since its group III/IV, from a blender that I trust, and seems like a top notch product, for roughly the same price as RTS (when buying the right bulk), I might be using that too.

Then againm, since my 9-3 is a long haul, highway driver, I might conmsider an amsoil or redline A3 rated 30 wt oil too.

In short, RTS is a great oil not that cheap but not expensive... Id say more like 'fairly priced' and certainly should be on the short list for MANY applications...
