Why I like Windows

Yup. You have a perfect grasp of why people use VLC.

On my Ubuntu system I use the stock movie player (Totem) but from time to time the codecs shipped by Ubuntu (which are usually open-source variants, reverse-engineered from their closed-source, proprietary counterparts and meant to be compatible) stumble on some stranger file formats. It is then that I fire up ol' trusty VLC and things tend to work out just fine. VLC is a bit slower, a bit more sluggish but it never, ever seems to fail!

And having used Apple Computers I can say that is typical-you usually have to wait a long time before printers and scanners are compatible with a new operating system release. Which is a big hassle.

I've been a Mac user since 2002, Windows user since 3.0, and Linux guy since 2004. Never an issue with compatibility of my printers. I've had Epson, HP, Canon, and Brother. All have worked well with Windows and OS X.

My latest printer, an HP 8500a all in one (going on 3 years old now) worked flawlessly with my Mac and even Linux. Like most things, it was a PITA to install under Win 7.

Also never an issue with my digicams, camcorders, and other perhiperals under OS X.

I think the key here is to not buy the cheapest. Buy mid grade - it will last longer, be supported longer, and in the case of printers, cost less.

All I know is that in recent years I have had serious problems with photo printers and scanners that are capable of scanning film when it comes to Apple Computers. And I used Apple Computers for a long time (since 1996). Windows computers always seem to have support. So I know a thing or two about Apple Computers.

Linux operating systems may be fine as servers, but I would not want one for a desktop computer.

I think Apple is so much into the mobile computing idea and the mobile lifestyle that they forgot about the people who do graphic design and work on photographs. Maybe Microsoft will make the same mistake. There are a few people, maybe not many, who still do computer graphics and work on photographs. They will probably do that sort of thing on a desktop computer and not while they are walking down the street carrying a tablet computer.

And an all-in-one printer typically makes for a bad photo printer. A photo printer is just that-it prints photographs with photo quality.

A long time ago at this website I pointed out the lack of support for printers and scanners to a Linux promoter here who was saying I should switch to Linux. He told me I should write my own drivers for my printers and scanners.

And at work I worked directly with a programmer who had to use Windows programs to do the programming. That programmer hated Microsoft, Windows, and Bill Gates but he still had to use Windows programs to get his work done.

I am too mature to get into hatred for some corporation or some computer operating system or some individual who once worked for Microsoft. All I want is software and hardware that works for ME! I don't really care all that much who makes that software and hardware.
