I think the west is going to have to get over this idea that they can't make quality. I know the Chinese are historically known for copying and stealing many things, (including the latest of trying to lure our fighter pilots to help train theirs) but they can make some good products. The quality is more competitive now than it was 15 years ago. Plus the younger generations are open to the idea of buying them.Has any of these recent Chinese EVs been NHTSA crash tested?
RE: younger generations. People under 40 in the US today don't know anything about communism. Haven't been taught it. Also there is some BS in that video about Steel and aluminum. The Chinese ate the tariffs costs to keep the price low. Steel prices didn't go up.I think the west is going to have to get over this idea that they can't make quality. What concerns me is the sure weight of these EV's. For example the F150 Lightning weighs in at almost 7000 pounds. What happens when 7000 pounds hits another vehicle at even 50 miles per hour.![]()
hough how much did a regular F 150 lightning weigh ?
I remember the "buy American" campaigns in what - 1980's, for things like T-shirts. Didn't work then either.RE: younger generations. About 4000 pounds. So the Lightning is almost double the weight. Not to mention the fire hazzard those batteries carry. They burn HOT and they are not easy to extinguish.
It's not the quality, If it can't pass our crash testing It wouldn't be for sale here anyway. Plus they would have to have a network of service center/dealers in place first Before I would even consider one.I think the west is going to have to get over this idea that they can't make quality. Isn't Volvo (Geely) Chinese-owned?Has any of these recent Chinese EVs been NHTSA crash tested?
Sadly, you can't stop what's coming....
I think crash safety is the barrier that will stop Chinese EVs.Has any of these recent Chinese EVs been NHTSA crash tested?
Yep. Not to mention Chinese owned Volvo has a US manufacturing facility already and are going to (do already??) build the polestar there?Isn't Volvo (Geely) Chinese-owned?
As a result, safety is a non-issue as they have Volvo's tech and resources at their disposal.
Also, when you consider the cut-throat prices of these EV's, I won't be surprised when they quickly populate the North American landscape.
They will pay US/German/Japanese/Canadian Engineers to show them how.I think crash safety is the barrier that will stop Chinese EVs.
The Chinese can copy Amazon trinkets all they want, no body tests them, no body cares really.
When it comes to constructing a unibody vehicle out of Ultra High Strength Steel, Aluminum, with modern tech while containing a massive battery while passing crash tests, the Chinese will ultimately fail. I'll be bold enough to say it's part of their engineering psyche to copy crap, send it, and not worry about it coming back because of a giant ocean and it was too cheap to return.
But now you need to have a dealer network and comply with DOT and NHSTA guidelines that even the big 3 complain about. Good luck to BYD and whatever Chinese "engineering" with their copy pasta. I don't think the Big 3 even care, cheap Chinese labor is worthless when your vehicles can't pass crash tests.
True, but then they will cut corners and pump out crap. Even if they did I bet it would take them years to implement it and get the tech / factories capable of putting out quality products. Quality is not a Chinese characteristic unless maybe for military purposes and we've seen how some of those things have turned out. JMHOThey will pay US/German/Japanese/Canadian Engineers to show them how.
If the CEO's can take there money, so can the engineers.
I 100% agree. Its why I do not own a Chinese made Buick.True, but then they will cut corners and pump out crap.
