Why don't they put turbos on more vehicles?

I've read good and bad reviews on CVTs, but so far I find Nissan's version to be pretty [censored] good. Of course I can't speak for longevity, etc., but I definitely like it better than any automatic transmission I've had in any car thusfar.

I would guess that after driving an E36 M3 he'd probably think it was pretty dull.

"Sporty" is relative. If you're used to driving Camrys or Malibus I'm sure the Juke feels sporty.

Anything BMW makes leaves a lot to be desired IMHO. Too pricey and more show than go.

I'm used to much more than the family candyass rides you mentioned.

BTW what does XB in the Scion stand for? Xtra Boxy because that is the ugliest POS on the road.

Luckily your opinion is worth about as much as we've paid for it.

A shoe box with a little engine and tiny hair drier coupled with a slide and drive transmission = BMW M car performance.
If someone said that to me i would tell them they need to step back from that crack pipe just a tad.

Always a good laugh on BITOG.

Ah yes, CVT, the pinnacle of engaging driving experiences! Especially when it just randomly changes RPM for no reason or holds the engine at a ridiculously low RPM causing it to lug and a horrible vibration to resonate through the cab.

I would consider a turbo 6 speed Juke. Apart from the awkward looks, the interior is actually super practical.

I just don't imagine a CVT would hold up too long behind a turbocharged engine. One or two "fun" passes and it would put itself into limp home mode.

So is yours Roadkill. If I wanted your opinion I would've asked for it. We all know you're a diehard Beamer fan boy.

Awww, name calling, Classy! At least you've made no attempts at pretending you can engage in intelligent discourse.

And who is "we"? I'd love to know how the guy with twelve posts thinks he can speak for the board as a whole

Well I've pushed this one through many "fun" passes and it is quite solid. Also exhibits none of the weaknesses you describe. Who knows... maybe Nissan has this design figured out. I can say it is very smooth and fluid-like. Feels like driving a direct drive electric motor vehicle. **I must add that it can be shifted as a 7 speed manual, not 5 speed like I mentioned previously.

Did consider the 6 speed manual transmission version until we discovered it is FWD only. The CVT model is selectable FWD, AWD or AWD-V.

Not a fan of this thread's CVT spokesperson, but... I actually like CVTs a lot. They make the most sense of any automatic transmission type for most uses, IMO. The only reason I don't like driving CVT-equipped cars is that I hate driving ANY car without a fully manual transmission. Something about not having that extra measure of control just infuriates me to no end. If it weren't for that, I'd probably love a CVT.

As for the Juke, it does seem to be pretty spacious for its footprint (length * width). If I had to pick a car for one of the insanely crowded cities in South Asia, I'd probably look at a Juke. Anywhere else, the artificially jacked-up center of gravity is just a huge turn-off to me. I'd much rather have a Honda Fit or something.

As for BMW, I don't think any of the trash talk here merits a further response, so I'll leave that one alone.

Excessive name calling gets a vacation for Mr. Spyderman. So let's please commence back with a technically-oriented discussion.

Ope, late to the party on this one. I always miss all the fun. Must be a record, 13 posts and a well deserved vacation. That didn't take long.

Name calling usually means they're losing the debate.

Reason to put turbos onto vehicles: quick passing and high MPG. I needed to do a few quick passes with the Cruze this afternoon coming from work. Got from 50-70 decently quickly in 4th, would have been faster in 3rd, but didn't need the extra grunt. ScanGauge II said 45 mpg after my 25 mile commute.

That was me keeping my foot out of it the rest of the drive, however. If I drive like a demon, that figure drops to about 37-38 mpg.

Turbo's make Russians crazy.

This burnout video is a perfect example of what real old school turbo lag is. Big blower, running big boost, down long pipes...takes awhile to get turning. That is exactly why BMW is using 2-3 smaller turbo's on their I6's. Which is why older cars were so fun to drive. This is also why Ford goes threw the complexity and expense of a using two turbo's on their Ecoboost V6. You would have 200hp, a few more rpm, 201hp, a few more 205, a bit more 400+, than after a couple grand it drops off and you shift.
