Why don’t people recycle their old oil?

Has anyone brought up an obvious reason why a deposit for motor oil is a BAD idea?

Vagrants already collect bottles and steal scrap metal, do you want to start your car one day to find some bum took all your oil?

walk with the used oil and filter(s) to car dealership that's about 5 blocks away . Figure get some exercise as well . Oil jugs act as weights . :- )

Just the fairness issue that not all oil that goes in comes out. It may be a surprise to some, but many engines do consume oil between changes.

Rant warning.

The nanny state types here in Kalifornia who cant balance a budget want to put a deposit on grocery bags! What's next, condoms?

Rant over.

BTW, the five gallon limit is a DOT thing, or so I was told. You are transporting hazardous waste, so more than that quantity would require permits, placards, etc.

If I had the know how, i'd create a filtration system to remove the contaminants from the oil and use it for heating. That or maybe have an oil company to PAY YOU for it so they can recycle it into a green oiL!

Sorry, my brain sort of made a bad left turn there.

I collect my used oil in 5 gallon containers. When they are full I take them to my local Autozone and empty them in the massive used oil collection container in back of the store.

Been doing this for years.

I couldn't imagine doing anything else with it.

deposits, coupons, bringing oil to a recycle center or some form of regulation -- too complicated.the easiest way is curbside pickup with your other recyclables.as well, this eliminates any reason for non compliance.it's been that way in my area for many years.

I've been taking my oil to recycling centers for so long I forgot how long ago I started doing it. At least 20 years. Before that it just got dumped on the ground somewhere. That was before society was alerted to the fact that dumping it on the ground was not a very good isea.
