Why do you put your wipers up before it snows?

Kind of a stupid thing to argue about. There are bigger hills to die on and better subjects to taunt people with.
I mean...have you spent any time on this site? The crap folks go on about, this is right there where it should be.

I taught my sister how to do it on her Camry since she lives in Charlotte and she has no garage. The "park up" is a feature on some cars that a lot of folks don't even though they have.

I often flip them up. Especially if it's still snowing. It's easier to scoop down into the cowl that way when I'm cleaning the car off a second time. Always a bit hesitant to bang on the blades too much if they are frozen (I don't always clean the car because I'm getting ready to drive away--sometimes I do it the night before, and then the following day).

I also used to own a VW TDI and that was never going to warm up if it was less than like 20F. Walk away for 15 minutes, maybe it might have thawed the windshield. Other cars, sure, let it idle and the worst ice would thaw. Not that car!
I wish I had 1) a heated steering wheel and 2) a heated windshield.

The VWs have a "service position" b/c if you don't use it, you can't put them up...they contact the hood. No issue for me, I leave em' down haha

It's interesting (to me anyway) how wipers have come full circle regarding their position in relation to the hood and windshield. The wipers on my mom's 72 Monte Carlo were completely concealed under the hood and you really couldn't do anything with them unless you turned them on and then turned the ignition off mid-wipe. Enter the Japanese cars that had the wipers in full view with a knuckle that would enable you to lift them off the glass and leave them that way. Even the domestic cars that had visible wipers didn't have that knuckle. It was a revelation (to me). Now certain makes have returned to hiding them partially under the hood where you can't use the knuckle unless you put them in the service position (my Kia, my sister's Toyota). I hope they make up their mind someday. 😅

Makes total sense when there is freezing rain. That’s the only time I leave my wipers up.

What would I know living on a northern climate with occasional freezing rain mixed with snow later.

I'm sure those are nice--the heated steering wheel is the one option my wife didn't get that she wanted on her new car. I thought she should not have compromised, but eh, next car.

I miss heated seats--now that was a luxury. As is an electric seat, I miss being able to move while moving.

All wiper down on the 4 vehicles here in NY and the 2 in VA. All of them have a Frost Guard / FrostBlocker windshield cover on them which also covers wipers and cowl area. The NY ones have about 8" of snow on them and currently getting packed/covered by sleet. The 2 in VA are covered in ice.

From 2 years ago in NY on my sons Forte.

10 minutes ago in VA. He's probably one of the only ones rocking X-Ice Snow winter tires also. Yes, he knows it's all the others he needs to worry about if he has to go out.

I put up my wipers last night after clearing most of the snow off my pickup. It was raining and temps expected to drop below freezing. Overnight some snow slid down from the roof onto windshield and got around the windshield wiper arm. Today I could not put the wiper arm back to normal as there was icy snow in the way. I drove with the wipers in the almost down position.

speaking of covers.. Friend of mine gave up on trying to remove the snow/ice around the wipers.. I got them one of those windshield covers, best purchase EVER!! covers up the wipers and cowl area, no more issues. (y) It was a no-name from the big A, nice oxford nylon fabric on the outside of it, I was very impressed!

I don't get it. I get in, turn on the car, turn on the defrost, start the de-snow/ice process on the exterior with my brush/scraper, when I'm done, I get in the car and my wipers should be free. I've never understood this and not doing it doesn't make me any slower to leave my driveway vs. my wiper-up neighbors and I've never damaged my wipers/had issues. I feel this is one of those things that folks do b/c others do it, not b/c they actually have thought through it. Every time I see it I think "Some teenager is going to come by and grab them/break them off."

I did this this morning. Went out/brushed off a few inches of snow, started the car, let it run with defrosters all on. Went back in. Came out a 10 mintues later, finished brushing off the snow/ice that was left, the wipers were free, left. Wasn't snowing so didn't need the wipers really anyway. If my wipers had been up, I wouldn't have left any sooner. If it would have been an emergency, I would have just spent more time scraping/not gone back in is really all so I could see out the front/back and just left.

What say you BITOG-Kollective?
I don't. I coat my windshield with glass science rain repellent a few times a year.
