GF's Dad hit a deer back around Halloween... busted headlight, krinkled hood and fender... car still ran and Drive fine...
it's a 2009 Subaru Impreza wagon, with about 250k mi. it used to be her Mom's, then hers for a bit, but it's Dad's now.
He Drives Truck for a living, so this is only a "runabout" to get him the 30 or so mi to/from the yard..
Initially they bought a new headlight assembly from the dealer, and were gonna source their own panels. ( he used to work the line at Honda, he can build a car)
but for some reason they took it to a body shop...a new to them body shop as their usual guy retired...
the body shop and State Farm Totaled it out.
instead of looking for something new, they bought it back, and are having that same shop fix it, knowing it will have a Salvage Title... i've not talked to them Directly about it, but I believe she said they paid around $7k to buy it back.

like I said...Halloween....
Car is still at the Shop.
I noticed this little lot I pass going to and from work every day has a similar Impreza on their lot. 2 years newer, 150k FEWER miles, Sedan instead of Wagon and even Nearly the same color, for just under $8k which is less than what they'll have in the wagon when the shop is done with it, even with used parts...

I texted it to her mom, on the off chance it "wasn't too late" to pull out of the deal and get their money back, but she doesn't think that's possible any more.

you always find the better deal too late.

When I'm looking for a car - or anything, really, I keep hitting Facebook Marketplace. This trains the algorithm, "wow, this guy is really into Priuses" or whatever, so after I finally buy something it keeps spamming me with ad listings.

One other factor is that you don't know necessarily know what might be wrong with the "grass is greener" option. I've seen a few cars that were creampuffs in the ad and turds on the test drive.

They paid $7k to buy back a 16 year old Subaru with 250k on it? What did the insurance company payout?

This is how I feel about houses. I’ve been hearing so much about waiting for the perfect deal. Hasn’t come. Some I’m just forgetting about the perfect deal and getting a good deal.

Don’t stress about it; they are adults and they made their own decision about how to handle it. The consequences of that decision are theirs.
