Why do people dislike Project Farm?

I bet some of the people bashing PF would gladly take medical advice from the TV doctor on CNN.
How are those two connected? I'm not sure what you mean.

What is noticeable in this thread is that there have been numerous technical objections made to the PF "tests" complete with detailed explanations as to why what he presents is not valid. On the other hand those who support the videos make comments as you have done above. There's a reason for that.

Yes. Its because we're smart enough to know PF is for entertainment purposes.
Good enough. If only Project Farm would say such a thing, such as a disclaimer that said "There's nothing factual in this video at all, I'm only going through all this effort as a way to entertain the viewers of YouTube." You know, kind of like the disclaimer on Law & Order where they say the episode isn't meant to depict any actual person or event. Or perhaps the guy on YouTube who substitutes iPhones for brake pads and stops a Porsche. I don't think he's advocating anyone actually replace their brake pads with iPhones.

Maybe PF does that somewhere, I don't know. From what I've seen he truly believes these videos have worth and technical merit.

I liked the PF oil test where he compared anti-seize to oil by running a lawnmower with nothing but anti-seize in the crankcase...when I was recovering from surgery, and unable to work or do anything, I spent a lot of wasted time on YouTube...including the time I wasted on that one...

They particularly dislike his oil tests. Why? Does it not seem "real world"? He tests bearings to see how much wear will occur. What's so bad or misleading about it?

It is only entertainment for the most part but some of his stuff is okay like super glue, tape testing and so on. You guys are making too much of this IMO.

I watch project farm for entertainment. Not for knowledge on oils.

I did enjoy his video about standard and premium gas where he used the see through cylinder head as well as opening up the lawn mower engine to check for cumbustion deposits.

Says his biggest audience is 18-44 year old females - seems a bit strange, wonder if that's an accurate metric.
I dont know as I do not have you tube account and have never had to provide my age to watch a you tube video. Who knows how thay get that info about age? My guess would be that registered users have to give You Tube their age along with other data to get an account. Looking quickly at a couple of other auto channels, Chris Fix, Motor trend ,Scotty Kimler and Eric the Car Guy have mostly male viewers Maybe the chicks have a crush on the Project Farm guy and find him cute or something? I have only watched 2-3 of PF videos. They are cheap entertainment for the most part, nothing more, as is the case with most you tube channels. Got to take some of them with a grain of salt and others with the entire salt shaker.

There were other guys testing adhesives … but not surprised JB Weld was one of the best …

Yep, I saw that. I mean if you glue a bunch of pieces together with different glues the one that take the most pressure wins. I found it informative.
Exactly … these are the kinds of youtube things I find useful …
Motor oil is already tested to the high heavens …

Nothing misleading at all.
I find it funny, people trash these tests (also Rats Tests) who ACTUALLY show factual proof testing oils and which ones prevent wear best.
I suspect they dislike his tests because they have nothing other to offer as far as factual tests and proof.

So go with your gut, if you like the tests, choose the proper API and select from these guys, you cant go wrong vs people who think they can tell the difference in motor oils based on nothing more then the make up of oil.

Who cares if the test is relevant in an engine? One thing for sure, its more relevant then comments in forums. So choose the one that produces the least wear, you cant go wrong no matter what oil you choose, so why not choose the one best in wear?
I guess in the other case, for people who do not believe real wear tests on motor oil, then choose the oil with the most wear *LOL*
(ok, and Ill be glad to be in with the 18+ females, what's wrong with that?)

) flame on ..

If I showed you how well my .308 works as a pry bar, that doesn't in any way translate to useful information about its shooting performance. Pert Plus and anti-dandruff shampoos do wonderfully well in these "tests" as do bleaches. Put some 80w-90 through there, it'll do incredibly well, none of that has anything in the way of crossover to real world performance in an actual ICE.

You are trying to hang your hat on a correlation that doesn't exist by ascribing legitimacy to a circus act with zero applicability to the application at hand. You might as well be testing taste, smell or how well it works as a roach deterrent. Just like we don't run Noack on gear oils, we don't run EP tests on engine oils. That's why, despite these SAE sequences existing, they aren't used on those applications. If there was merit, they would be included in the testing performed by the API or ACEA, they aren't, because there isn't. Some guy with a timken machine, camera and too much free time hasn't uncovered the Secret Squirrel handshake, he's telling you how well your torque wrench works as a framing hammer and you are clapping like a seal.

Think he lost his license to practice anything but hacking

I'm not a fan of either CNN or Fox news, but Dr. Gupta is a practicing, licensed neurosurgeon in Georgia. He graduated from U of M medical school and his parents were engineers at Ford. He seems to have a pretty clean track record, but mixing journalism/entertainment with doctoring is always going to encourage extra criticism.

Project Farm is fine if you take it for what it is. Some is good, some not so good. Trust me, real peer reviewed research is not always accurate either.
