Seems every gasoline engine "muscle car" or "performance car" string has at least one recommendation for a diesel oil in it. I have a few notions of why....but am curious of why you guys think that is. I mean we have some really stout well performing oils out there for gasoline engines....but yet seems many here on BITOG seem to recommend diesel oils for everything across the board. Why?

Stronger antiwear packs? Higher viscosity?

The diesel oils are simply more robust than you run of the mill PCMO.

Flat tappet cams. Pushrod OHV muscle car engines/2 valves per cylinder even in stock form have decent amount of spring pressure compared to a DOHC 4 valve per cylinder mill.

The heavy duty engine oils have over 1000 ppm zinc compared to about 700 ppm in GF-4 oils.

I recommend them for four main reasons:

1) Great AW packages.
2) Huge TBN's and TBN retention.
3) Better mid to higher end viscosity selection.
4) Typically lower cost per volume.

Now if you combine the above in a synthetic base stock oil, it suddenly springs out that some of these oils are the best motor oils on the planet! GREAT low temp flow, killer retro engine protection, long drains, great engine storage potential. I could go on!

Because they are not EMO maybe?

For reasons of convenience, we ran Diesel engine oil in the gasoline trucks in our company fleet, as well as in the Diesels, for a few years. Bad idea overall. Way too much combustion chamber & plug deposits and serious detonation problems. Be careful doing this.

Chemical engineers developed different oil formulations for spark ignition and compression ignition applications with good reason. Of course, oils with both C and S ratings should be fine.

I suppose this would be a problem with some diesel only oils in gas engines with massive consumption. Never seen it be a problem, though even in cars that burned a goodly amount of oil.

besides a specialty store, you cant readily but diesel spesfic oil that isnt also designedf for gas use.

whens the last time anyones gone into any parts store, even a case, cat or deere dealer, and seen an oil like this?
