Why Chirp the Horn When Locking a Car?

Do you think GPS has increased the body's internal skills of immediately knowing which North is?

If your car parallel parks itself is it necessary to know how to parallel park? Is parallel parking SO HARD that you can't remember how to do it if you needed to?

Who uses GPS to fine tune their body's internal ability to find which direction north is? That's what a compass is for.

If you don't like new technology, don't use it.

People generally do not have any sort of "skill" to speak of. Usually... none.

It is my contention that people DO NOT KNOW HOW TO DRIVE. Period.
* of course there are some exceptions.. but get in a Prius or some sort of similar new car, and see how made for those with no clue it is. "Engine start/stop" is now a button.

It's just a couple of examples of how people are losing their abilities...

Technology is good; I've developed processes for B-Polar & CMOS Integrated Circuits for 32 years. I know technology inside & out.

It's when people are losing their abilities because they don't use them is the problem.

Case in point: I was in a breezeway by an entrance facing West with about 15-18 young Engineers & Scientists and I asked who knows which way is North. NOT ONE knew which was was North!

I don't think that has ever been the case in modern society. See, they are losing their senses.

Man, if at any point you asked me which way was north I'd have to stop and think about it. If I wasn't surrounded by familiar landmarks there's no way I'd know if the sun was high in the sky, it was covered by clouds, it was night, and I didn't have a compass.

I don't think this is unique to the post GPS world. There aren't many people whose bodies instinctually know which way is north like they know which was is left.

See what I mean now?? I can instantly, within 1/2 second, tell you which way is North at any place. Even out wherever I have never been before.

People's internal abilities are dumbed-down/lost when they do not use them!

This is what's been happening and VERY FEW people actually see it happening, let alone discuss it online or anywhere else!

Man... the average Boy Scout doesn't have that ability. I never had that ability, nobody I know who I have had to determine direction with ever had that ability. I mean, with that exact logic, would you make the same argument against the humble compass?

It's great that you can, but judging the rest of us for using current navigation technology is really far out there.

Besides, in order for that skill to be useful in place of GPS you have to combine it with a map, which is not safe to do while driving a car.

I think it is a little more than that. I have engineer and architect friends who are brilliant. Some lack common sense and street smarts, or the ability to do simple repairs around their house or car. Simple home repairs can be daunting tasks for these guys. They talk a good job. LOL They could be the exception, but I'm just saying. There are different kinds of smarts, some people excel in different areas. Just be thankful you didn't get lost in the woods with those engineers and scientists.

+1

+2. Simply, a way of insuring the door is locked and alarm is set.
If your goal is to scare someone, use the panic button.

Not judging, just acknowledging what's happening with people.

Boy Scouts 35-45 years ago did.....

Case in point #2: My teenage Step-Daughters have their face plastered in their games or texting when we go places for years. Now that they're driving, they don't know where hardly anyplace is, let alone how to get there!! I would always watch my Dad drive everywhere all through my up-bringing and when I went to drive, I never got lost or needed a map or let alone a "SIRI" to tell me how to get anywhere!

Abilities: Lost.

So you're telling me that Boy Scouts 35 years ago didn't need a compass? I don't believe that for a second.

The ability to remember where Grandma's house is isn't a skill. The ability to use navigation tools like GPS, a compass, and/or a map is a skill. If your teenage step-daughters can still figure out how to get places, they have that skill.

Are you suggesting people deliberately wait to arm their cars until someone passes right by the front of their car?

I think people just arm it when they leave, regardless of what/who is around them. In more densely populated areas, you'd never be able to arm your car because there are always people walking by in close vicinity of your vehicle.

Seriously? A chirp like that has never scared me. I guess some people are easily frightened. Majority of the time I don't even notice it.

Just as long as they realize the GPS can be wrong... We've had people drive in circles trying to find our place following a gps. We have a bunch of similar place names that can throw a gps off if the person using it doesn't pay attention and have an idea of where they actually want to go.
A couple times now I've had to just have them stop at an intersection, and drive over and have them follow me back...

Sure Boy Scouts learned how to use a compass..... But in general life capabilities, we didn't need them.

The kids rely on SIRI to find & get places. I watched, learned, memorizes street names
in a 300,000+ city & surrounding suburbs, on & on.

Didn't need a GPS (never had one) or depth sonar to find sunken plateaus in a 14 Mile diameter lake either.

I would memorize certain structures on the shore, in 3 different areas, line them all up and
essentially "Triangulate" right on the fishing spot. Easy.

Siri is a tool. Just because it's easy to use doesn't change the fact that it is a tool that can be used to accomplish a task.

It's great that you don't need GPS. But I don't know how to use a grain mill because I can purchase bread at the store. I don't know how to hand crank a car because the electric starter does that for me. I don't know how to load a flintlock musket because I have access to guns that use full metal jacketed rounds. I don't know how to change the ribbon on a typewriter because I have an electronic word processor. I don't know how to process film because I have a digital camera. I don't know how to change the needle on a record player because all my songs are on my computer.

I can keep going, but the point is that technology allows us to make tasks easier so we can devote more time to other things, like solving more complex problems or playing Angry Birds.

That you memorized street names only makes you useful as a firefighter or a cab driver. It's not something the rest of us need to dedicate brain cells to unless we decide we want to.

If you want to grow a majestic beard and frolic nude among the birds and the bees and talk to bears and live off the land with no man made tools other than what your skills can provide, more power to you. But I'm going to keep using the tools society makes available to me because I can.

BUT they cannot find a popular restaurant on their own they have been to many times just several miles away! Why? Cause they "didn't pay attention". Who's paying attention to their surroundings anymore?

Their (many people's) abilities to do inherent human abilities have severely diminished.

this has got to be the most goofy/whining/inane thread topic that I've seen in a while.several concur, by reading replies.
is there really a thread about a horn honk?
a couple of posts stating first world problems.
a couple referring to a grumpy old man.
homer's dad shaking his fist at a cloud.
you guys need a hobby. among others.
I'm not raggin' on you turk. I wish we had more of these goofy threads, as they give us a lot of laughs.for that , I thank you.
four of us are reading this and lol.
as far as your girls not knowing how to get anywhere -- try an experiment.blindfold them, and take them outside to an open field, at night.spin them around, until they're dizzy.sit them down, and remove the blindfolds. five will get you ten that they know the way to the nearest mall.
again, thanks for the laughs, and have a good day.

Yes. Go back a page or two and you'll see someone who does it for kicks.
