Why Chirp the Horn When Locking a Car?

I cant say that Ive ever been spooked or scared by a horn chirp. Heck, I can also confirm that it is irrelevant even for our toddler.

Its a pretty benign thing, but the chirp and/or light flash can be a very convenient assurance of locking the vehicle, without having to go over to it for positive verification.

Frankly, if not for the remote locking and unlocking, I dont really see the point of power door locks.

That explains why a guy head-butted my car last week.

He couldn't form the words to explain himself after the concussion, but it all makes sense now.

Honest answer. It verifies the doors are locked when I haven't heard the mechanism lock. If someone is surprised by it, too bad. It isn't like someone is laying on the horn. It's a chirp and nothing more.

This place is turning into the grumpy old men site...

This is the first time I hear chirping the car's horn with remote control.
I only push the lock button on my E430 key once to lock the car if I was more than 15-20 minutes away in a not so friendly neighborhood. My S2000 has remove FOB but never use it, it isn't on the key chain. If I need to lock/unlock the car I use the key.

I'll try this sometime to see if my remote control does the chirping or not.

Awesome.

Yea.
Awesome.
Until you find out the person has a Heart condition.

One of the stronger reasons never to buy a new car..

This is only my (overinflated for the sake of Internet humour) opinion, but:

Modern cars will beep when you put the key in, if you don't have a seatbelt on, when outside temp drops, of you have the lights in but the ignition off, when you lock/unlock, when you reverse,

All these beeps are unnecessary and annoying, if you need a beep to remind you that you just put the key in the ignition you're probably so stupid at you shouldn't be driving. Not to mention a reversing beep! I mean, who thinks they can reverse without mirrors or neck movement?!

But to answer e OPs question, it's their to remind people with the attention span of a goldfish that, just 3 seconds ago, they locked their door.

Exactly. What's wrong with people? Are all these assist electronics, GPS's, Parallel-Parking assists dumbing down people so they have VERY FEW skills anymore??

The majority of the time I don't even lock my vehicles. When I do I lock the doors, close it and then walk away. I don't carry the little remotes and unlock them with the key.

On occasion I've been around a vehicle that honked when someone locked or unlocked the doors. It never frightened me, never bothered me, and I never even gave it a second thought until now.

Blowing the horn at people with their arms full of shopping in crossings and when the guy is checking the oil at full service gas stations can be cheap entertainment also. LOL

My Jeep doesn't even have keyless entry. I use a key to unlock it and push the button inside the door to lock it before I shut it. Maybe I should press the horn before I get out to let everyone know I'm locking my vehicle.

The only thing I find annoying is when people have to press it numerous times so the horn beeps 4 or 5 times. The car is either locked or it isn't. Pressing the button 5 times isn't going to lock it "more".

It comes down to vanity and the person locking their car thinking it's worth announcing to the world that they are totally middle class and have a car with a key fob like any other car made in the last fifteen years, and they are cunningly protecting it, JUST SO YOU KNOW.

Paragraph #2: One little example of how Obsessive/Compulsive people are now. Where's the Media on
how massively people have changed?

If I lock my VW from the inside it still chirps when I close the door.

I don't think anybody does this because they're trying to impress you.

It's normal now. It's also a nice confirmation that the car is locked. There have been times where I've pressed the button and not heard a chirp, which saved me from walking away and leaving an unlocked car.

.......but you don't do it when somebody is in very close proximity of the horn. Wait the 10 seconds!

Who's doing that?

Do you think Parallel Parking Assist will make people any more experienced at Parallel Parking?

Do you think GPS has increased the body's internal skills of immediately knowing which North is?

The thieves then know exactly where to go... to rip out the speaker after popping the hood, after getting in.. because of that chirp.

And don't have a Honda...

I don't exactly blame the companies for appealing to the sense of ego. It sells!
