Man I miss these! Just different, fun!Our Church's Lawn-Boy ran the exhaust under the deck, I thought it was pretty quiet - or it had a less irritating drone than a Briggs 4-stroke.
Mufflers? Cost and weight for a hand held device. Then weight and cost snowballs, as with a big silencer now you need to add heat shields with an air gap over the muffler can.

Probably why they don't do that anymore. Must have been way before spark arrestor daysIf I set for a minute or two with the mower running it burns the grass from the radiant heat. Already put some smoker grill insulation under it.
I listen to mowers 8hrs a day. Always wear ear plugs. Wouldn't dare mow a single yard without them. Would probably be deaf if I did. Only problem with the ear plugs is they tend to pack the wax in after a while, but I've been mindful with how far I shove them in and it seems to be okay. One ear it can easily go in too far and the other is a pain to keep inI cut 3 lawns about every 3 weeks with gas ope. I wear a pair of ear muffs when doin them, so it's no big deal to me. And when the neighbors have their lawn service guys cutting grass, it's still no big deal to me. If I had to listen to it everyday from morning to night, then it probably would bother me.,,
Have you tried the foam ones like the picture attached? I use these at work and home. They seem to keep my ears clean and work very well to block the sound.I listen to mowers 8hrs a day. Ear plugs always give me earaches after a few hours. I'm stuck using muffs except for short term use. I usually wear both plugs and muffs while shooting indoors.I listen to mowers 8hrs a day. Those only provide a small degree of protection from loud noises... Not enough to prevent damage from prolonged exposure to loud noise and are almost entirely ineffective against explosive or percussive noises.Airpod pro's with noise cancellation. JBL makes them too.
Interesting, thanks for sharing. I have been using them for some time with no issues or apparent hearing loss with OPE/tractors. My wife might disagree. Those only provide a small degree of protection from loud noises... That’s awesome! May as well have the blue angels in my backyard performing with my Honeywell 5500 generator! My Honda em6500sx with a GX390 engine. At 75 meters you’re not sure if it’s running. Not bad for an open-frame generator.

I'm a Honda fan and I love your generator but at 75 metres a jackhammer would sound tame so I'm not sure about your assertion. My Honda em6500sx with a GX390 engine. At 75 meters you’re not sure if it’s running. Not bad for an open-frame generator.

It's worse in the country than it is in the city. I swear you can hear people a mile away mowing their lawn. lolWell in comparison, I can hear my neighbour’s lawn tractor and he’s 400 meters away…![]()
