For more major parts like Alternator or Starter etc.. you think it is a better bet that you receive the brand and spec you see in the description if you choose wholesaler closeout vs it being labeled as both wholesaler closeout / private label ?? The latter would most likely be under a different brand.. correct?

I know this has come up many times but not on the specifics about which is more likely the more accurate part pertaining to the description.

wholesaler closeout is something like a walmart that has closed and you're getting an ACDelco oil filter in an ACDelco box

wholesaler private label closeout is something like a CarQuest that has closed and you're going to get a Moog tierod end in a Carquest box

EXACTLY correct! Well said.

As stated, in an ideal world the difference would just be what box it's in. In the real world, at Rock Auto, it may not be the same part even if described as Wholesaler Closeout. One example is a Mevotech upper control arm from their upper tier CMK series, but I received either their lower tier GK part, or who-knows-what, obviously different because no grease zerk, but it was a compatible part, not completely wrong. Think I had some brake hoses that were the same situation but listed as Raybestos or some other major brake supplier brand, and ended up being Sunsongs, but then other Wholesaler Closeout items where exactly right and in the same brand box.

did you use the control arm and the brake hoses ?

^ Yes, almost didn't use the control arm but then decided I just wanted to get a vehicle finished (taking up space in the garage), and the control arm was particularly easy to do, no alignment needed if I have to swap it again. I didn't really need a new upper control arm yet (original control arm was fine but figured since lower BJs were worn out, might as well do upper BJs while I'm at it) but was doing suspension and it was apart so figured I'd do it all at once... it's holding up so far. Must've been about 4-5 years ago, not a lot of miles on that vehicle since but a whole lot of potholes.

Hoses, turns out Sunsong is a little less generic than I'd realized, not bad quality, but I could have paid less to get that brand in a Sunsong box. Not much less though, since the other brand was a wholesaler closeout, but not worth the bother to return it. Rock Auto's canned reply for the control arm was the option of returning for a refund.
