LOL oilyriser, I always get a giggle from your posts...and then spend an hour wondering the ramifications.

Like one of my mother's former friends who could only turn left (i.e. NEVER across the traffic...she'd drive around entire blocks to avoid turning against).

How would your system work then ?

I just hope I never get to the point where the only car loan I can get comes with such a device as a condition. . .

A friend of mine had a similar device on her car. She bought the car from one of those lots that deal with "special" credit needs. However, the device did not have a flashing light to warn the payment was due. Here in the south that would be an indicator light for "rag it out before they round it up". Our friend was just about to ran out of gas and had no money, so she parked near a gas station and called us to help her out. By the time my wife got there, the wrecker was circling the parking lot to locate the car. Just couldn't understand why the car wouldn't start up so she could get to the gas pump. She of coarse had to put down a sizable down payment when she got the car, but 3 months later had still not made the first payment. She thought the device was completely unfair. She bragged about how she was keeping the car hidden in a shed were she was living and wouldn't keep the car parked in the open very long to avoid the repo man. I just chuckled.

I've sort of followed the stories about the capability of GM Onstar. I thought I read the other day about the police having the ability to call Onstar (on such an equipped vehicle) if they got into a chase situation with one of them. Onstar would then click a switch somewhere which would cut off the engine, so that the perp would then coast to a stop.

It seems like they could do the same thing with payments. Late on the payments? Onstar makes sure that bad boy stays parked. I have no idea if that is in the cards (yet), but I wouldn't be surprised after reading this.

If those things are as poorly installed as those "immobilizer" keyswitches they would not be hard to uninstall at all.

In fact one could dump the stupid unit underneath a cop car that's parked for donuts... splice it into the marker light feed with some 3M quicktaps and it would broadcast its location from dusk to dawn.

HAHA I'd pay to see that happen!

The Mel Farr dealership in Detroit has been doing this for years. Unfortunately, when the story aired the Detroit populace found a way to put a negative spin on this arrangement and made Mel Farr into some kind of predatory wolf.

So it seems she never intended on making payments on the car! I guess she has no intention of ever repairing her credit. She can forget about anybody giving her a chance ever again.

This reminds me of the old, infamous "Just World Hypothesis", which of course states that, "you get what you deserve and you deserve what you get..."

Kestas,
Well, you'd think so.

But it's these kinds of idiotic lending standards that gave us the subprime mortgage fiasco. I'm not sure who is more irresponsible. The person receiving the loan, or the one lending the money.

You make the call.

I don't know if she is really concerned about repairing her credit, but she will always have chances. That was her 2nd repo, plus a foreclosure on a house. She got the car back a week later by making some kind of arrangement. I have no idea if she still has the car. I know the transmission had to be rebuilt shortly thereafter, which she did not have the money. If someone (friend/relative) is willing to loan or you somehow have a large enough down payment and don't mind 25% or higher interest, you can get about anything.

From the sounds of it, Big Brother has been creeping up on us for years. Through OnStar, He'll call an ambulance for you if you hit a tree, but if He thinks you're late on your payments, he'll stop you dead in your tracks. Just hope He's actually right in His "judgments" about all of us little payment-makers...

Now, how much of a leap is it until we get to shut-downs for those who don't report for jury duty, don't vote in elections, or perhaps ultimately, register for membership in the wrong organizations, political parties, and so forth...

I truly believe I could go grab some bum living under a bridge and take him to any of a number of places around here selling cars, and get him approved and off the lot behind the wheel of something.

You can't turn on the radio or TV without hearing some man in a bad sports coat screaming, "No credit? Bad credit? No problem. Doesn't matter. Come on down to (whatever the name of the place is) and pick out what's on the lot."

Several relatives on my wife's side of the family probably have a negative credit score, if such a score even exists. Doesn't seem to prevent somebody selling cars somewhere around here to hook them up, though.

What happens if stopping the car puts the occupants in danger or in fact causes an injury?

Do you think one might be able to find a work-around on the Internet for such a device?
