Staying up late before doing night shift helped me build up the same thing. I traveled from FLA to NY in 22 hours easily. Actually first time I took a nap, and it messed me up, so on the way back I did it without naps and it was much easier, plus I stayed up until that night (arrived in the morning).

It was cool also to go from NY to CA in 2 days with 4 hours sleep. But then, I wonder if it is somewhat genetic, because my father has done 3 shifts in a row with only a few hours in between and had no problems feeling tired?

That was a big problem for me! I live in a townhouse, so once per week they've got people come through here who mow all the lawns. On those days I never got a good sleep!

I worked underground in Uranium mine in late 70's, I was young then. I had three shifts, graveyard, afternoons and day shift on rotation weekly with weekends off.

I went from day shift to graveyard, done 5 pm friday, to work Sunday night/Monday morning at midnight, short weekend. But, finished graveyard Friday morning and not back to work till 4 pm Monday afternoon to start afternoon shift. PARTY! on plane right after work and party till one dropped in Saskatoon till I got back on plane on Monday morning, to be young again.

Anyway, I found eating a big breakfast after graveyard along with a few beers to grog me down abit more, that got me to sleep. I then woke up around 4 pm, went to the universal gym, have a 1 hour workout on weights, eat big supper, relax, go to work. At that age, the workouts and parties allowed me to sleep good anytime. I dont know if I could handle graveyards now that I am no longer single and family is so important, as family man I now sympathize with those on shifts. I is proven shift work lessens life span, I doubt I would be alive today if I kept that shift life I enjoyed young and single.

Cyprs-worked the same sort of shift in the USAF. The first version was 4 swings off at 1200 then 24 hrs off start 4 mids off at 0800 then 24 hours off start days at 0800 for 4 days then off from 1600 for three more days and start swings at 1600. Work 12 days, three off. We asked for a change and they just change the days worked. Start days then swings last shift mids. It was a killer. See what your tax dollars get for you? They say that shift work cuts your life shorter, the quicker the turn around the worse it is.
