Who really needs gig Internet?

Who needs it?

I do.

Get all the kids over and there are no fewer than a dozen devices connected and streaming. Some are 4K TVs (we have two). Some are phones. Some are games. Some are laptops for work.

Whatever.

Having a surplus of capacity allows everyone to enjoy internet without limitation. I’ll happily pay a bit more for my FIOS gigabit.

I bet not hearing the offspring complain about lagging on their video games is worth it enough!

Checked my wireless devices and their download speed max out between 70 - 140Mbps. I doubt they are all running full throttle so 1 gig would be overkill but to get the best upload speeds you need to buy the fastest plan. Huge difference in a 100 / 5 plan vs a 1000 / 50 plan when you need to upload large files 10 times faster.

$250 a month is insane.
For 5 phones and 1g, nope.
I think our next cut will be cell phone plans. I'm paying just under $200 for two phones and 1g fiber and it's time to cut the cell phone bill.
I have an old iPhone 7 I may try on one of the Pay-Go plans such as Mint, etc.

How many people have gig internet and then use wi-fi to connect it?
Our main 4K tv is hardwired for this reason.

That said, 300MB fios is just fine. We can stream 4k material and have other devices running/streaming, and some online gaming going on in a manner that is “good enough” for us.

I’m not sure it really “costs” the ISP more to deliver a certain speed from the street to my home, so I refuse to pay it.

275MB Comcast is fine for me. I do have access to FIOS but they'd have to cross the waterline from my well to get the FIOS cable to my house.

I'd rather not find out how long it takes to get that fixed when the knuckle-draggers they hire to install FIOS damage it.

I have logged our traffic for weeks to see if the 100mbps connection ever gets maxed out. It does not, even with about 15 active devices, 2 kids streaming/ gaming and two adults working from home on MS teams.

Our local honey rink serves a live video stream and often has dozens of active devices on a 300 mbps fiber connection, whenever I use it I don’t notice any lag.

no problem saturating my 475Mbps connection over WiFi.
I suppose I could hook up a couple of Linux boxes from work and check the total possible throughput.
Ubiquiti AC-AP-Pro APs, Ubiquiti switch, Unifi Security Gateway.

I noticed the increase 10>25>50>100>200 Mbps however now at 400 Mbps on Xfinity no different. The biggest thing I noticed is the paltry 5 Mbps >10 Mbps upload.

I have worked remotely in IT application development services remotely since 2003. I stick to cheaper plan with internet under $75/month.

It seems like 4k TV does use bandwidth as I notice it waver 25 - 40 Mbps watching Disney+ or Amazon Prime apps.
