Really I thought a plain bearing spindle was the same thing as a spindle running in preloaded ball or roller bearing races. Machines often use drip or bath lube or grease for anti friction bearing, pressure isn't needed at all. Having clean oil is important to roller bearings though so a filter, not the bearings, would need some kind of flow to clean the oil, even if small. My old mower filters the oil and drops it back to the pan for the splash lube to use it. Never knew it worked that way but it makes sense.

Go do some research on the lubrication requirements of roller bearings vs journal bearings.

I don't need to do that. Obviously I was being sarcastic at your lecturing.
 
You said you wondered why they pressurized the roller bearings ... I gave the reason - just to supply a good flow of fresh oil, maybe also to provide some cooling - it's a little more sophisticated than a lawnmower engine -

You gave no sensible reason. Roller bearings don't need pressurized flow afaik. I suggested the pressurized flow is because they wanted a filter to clean the oil, and flow is needed to filter in common engines. Not talking centrifuge or gravity. Realize I have had a lot of experience in a lot of areas in a world famous research lab. I designed and ordered precision spindles for a dicing saw that had the races ground into the housing and had an air baffle to prevent dirt. I am very familiar with lots of kinds of spindles including air bearing so put it to rest already that no one knows anything but you. I fabricated my own plain spindles in the research lab machine shop for special machines I needed for my work. Notice I don't brag a lot but you seem to want references all the time instead of sticking to the subject. I would rather say I don't know much and explore ideas with people instead of competing.
My old lawnmower engine has roller and ball bearings too. OHV. not much less complicated than a Harley engine actually. They filter the oil independently which is pretty smart. Now I realize why the oil filter draining down almost instantly doesn't matter.
 
I never said or implied roller bearings needed to be "pressurized". But in this case they simply use pressure to provide a good flow of oil to the bearings, that's a pretty sensible reason - and that's an oil pump's main purpose in any oiling system that has an above rudimentary design. There you go again with the negative comments on what you think I think - sure wished the 'rolleyes' emoji worked, but it doesn't.

Harley filters at my dealer which is FULL price is less then $12 for the black, not sure why people like chrome but anyway ...

To the OP, if in doubt stick with the HD filter, no reason not too, the prices of the filter you show us is over $11.00 plus shipping for an after market filter, yet the Harley Filter cost the same and less./

BTW - no one here is listing what bike they are buying the filter for so comparisons not easy ... :o)

With the above said for the first time in 4 years I bought two non HD filters (just because/no reason) for fun, they are Hi-FLo which is a MAJOR producer of filters. Price wasnt any different within a dollar or two, guess I was just bored and wanted to do something different.

Keep in mind the cam bearings on later big twins use a direct cam to housing surface that does need pressure. Much like a “plain bearing”. And Zee Is correct, there has to be some kind of flow to even a roller bearing, and the pressure is simply that resistance created when more oil is being supplied than can exit the passages at any given time.

I’m just trying to see how good this filter is. I bought it and the wix for comparison of sorts. I will post more pics of it when it arrives.

Yeah too bad there isn't that roll eyes emoji. I wouldn't use it much, don't do a lot of that. You are the one telling someone they need to look things up as if they don't know, when you have no idea what they think or know. Funny how you turned that around when it's you, not me. I don't like these arguments, but not going to be passive on it all the time.

For some reason you can't accept an oil filter needs pressure, and if someone wants one, they pressurize the oil with an oil pump. Even if there is no other reason for pressurized oil, like in my old lawn mower. I guess it would be agreeing on something, that someone else has an idea, to accept it.

Good info. never knew much about Harley engines. I did read some, interesting story. Use the blade and fork and all that. That's a fair price for a chromed oil filter with the right specs.

What? ... where did I say or imply I don't accept or know that you need oil pressure to move oil through a filter or oiling system? Dang, you're getting pretty obtuse now in this discussion, but no surprise I guess ...
