Can someone tell me if i am right or wrong on the following: the higher the filtration level the more restrictive a filter becomes.
The reason i ask is i have used Amsoil oils for a while now both in Harleys and foreign bikes here in England. I put it in a lot of customers bikes and they all love it. I decided to try the Amsoil Harly oil filters this time rather than the Genuine Harley ones. The newer twin cam Harleys use a 5 micron filter the older Evo's use a 25 micron filter. The twin cams have a more complexed oiling system so need better filtration. You should not mix the filters as the Evo's oil pressure is not as high as the twin cams. I'm not concerned about using the Amsoil filters on the twin cams, but i am concerned about using them on the Evo's. Should i be concerned? Amsoil list differant filters for the twin Cam and Evo's as do Harley Davidson but i cant find any info on the differance between the Amsoil filters. I presume Amsoil know what they are doing. Can a filter be too restictive?

Any advice?

I think you are correct on all counts. Some have experienced problems with the Harley Super Premium 5 on Evos as they have shown to be too restrictive for the Evo system. So I would not use them and never have. I own both an Evo and Twin Cam. The driver for the Twin Cam being a finer filtration is some of the smaller oil passages. And yes the Twin Cam has more flow pressure. Another difference is that the Evo does not use an anti drainback valve. You will notice these differences in the Harley, Wix, Amsoil, Perf Form and many other filters that specifically address the Harley applications. As far as I know Wix is still making the Amsoil Eoa filters using the Donaldson synthetic media. Wix has shown that they know the difference between these two applications so I would assume that they have accounted for the flow differences between the two oiling systems. Anyone more familiar with the Amsoil filter can chime in here.

The Synteq media used in the current line of Amsoil filters combines both fine filtration and high flow. Formerly it was one or the other with conventional cellulose media, then came microglass-enhanced media that offered finer filtration and somewhat better flow. But the Donaldson Synteq media used in the Amsoil filters combines the best of both worlds and high contaminant capacity too. This info summary is from everything I have read on the matter and personal experience. However, you do pay a premium price to get this level of quality filtration. The question is, is it worth it to you?

bmw-t-g said just about everything that I could ..so

btw- The EaO is also the cheapest filter at that level of filtration over the duration of usage in a combustion environment.

The reason I mention about being worth it to you is that I personally cannot see myself paying that much for any filter and only using it for 3-5k miles. I would have to use it for at least 10k miles (maybe over 2 oci's if necessary?) to make it worth the cost. And if it is chrome, maybe 15k miles! (j/k)

I bought the EaO for my Harley and didn't think it was too expensive.... I'll keep using them!

Thanks everyone for the input.
Over here a chrome genuine harley filter cost about £14-£15 the Amsoils ones cost the same. I have ordered both evo and twin cam filters from the Amsoil distributer over here and fit one to a twin cam today. Just think nearly $27 for an oil filter and $25 a quart for Amsoil. 5 quarts and a filter thats about $150 retail.

I think we are getting ripped off over here.

Are you just figuring that out? Join the club of disenchanted consumers.

It's got nothing to do with Amsoil.

I've always contended that Harley ownership isn't going to be cheap so I roll my eyes when people complain that an oil change with top quality products costs about $50 US. But $25 per Qt and another $27 for a filter.... Wow that is expensive!!! So why is the cost so high over there? I would have thought with the dollar being so weak that US products would be a bargain.

Are there any other quality alternatives over there besides Amsoil? As much as I like their stuff, I would be at least looking. Maybe any other quality stuff is just as high?

Wow! That's a lot for one oil change.

Well the 3/4-16 thread is (although getting trumped eventually) the world's most popular thread. There should be no shortage of availability from alternative suppliers. It's going to be hard to trump the performance, though. He can find a filter to fit just about anywhere.
