Who makes the best standard size pickup?:

The question here is whether the OP really needs a full-sized truck.

For 15K, I think he’d be better off purchasing a moderately equipped Dodge Dakota Club Cab V6 with the automatic transmission. A Nissan Frontier King Cab is also a better choice.

Since he is not using is solely for hauling loads, you’d want four seats (at least) to comfortably transport passengers, as he mentioned earlier in the original post.

Just my $0.02.

I have an S10 short bed... I bouht it for off roading 9the ZR2 package is quite a good set-up), but when I want to lug something big, the size of the box limits me.

Sure, I guess I could have gotten a long box s10, but my first use was off roading back then, utility was second.

It is very utilitarian, dont get me wrong... I lug a LOT of stuff with it.

But, had I wanted a truck for lugging stuff and people around, I certainly would have needed to get a full size. Even to lug more than 2 people around in an extended cab small truck woul dbe a chore.

just my opinion... I see where youre coming from, and agree partway, but given my experience, full size is a necessity for moving anything of real size.

This ties into another thread. Looks like your needs are for a vehicle which although will be hauling light loads, needs a covered cargo area for security during moves or while flea market shopping...

Correct me if Im wrong.

Id prefer to support a US company, especially in the area of pickups, where the reality is that the US branded ones are better, tougher, and can stand up to more.

Granted, Ive always said that a vehicle is such a major purchase that the one that you sink your $$$ into has to be the one that is set up and is exactly how you want, regardles of if that means buying a chevy or a toyota or a made in China wal-mart car (theyll be here soon, Im sure). Its just too big of a purchase to be swayed by anything other than the fact that its exactly what you want.

that said, if I wanted one, Id want a domestic v6 MT... as itll be tougher and be able to handle more than its "equivalents".

I have no regrets with my fullsize Dodge 1500 longbed, V6 5-speed manual. Gets 19 mpg average city/highway. No less than 17 mpg and has done as well as 22 on a trip. I would not consider a Dakota. You will get about the same gas mileage as a fullsize and won't be able to haul as much.

I traded my F-150 for a Tundra and have no regrets. The Ford (5.0 V-8) was gutless and got bad mileage at the same time, the rear axle and transmission failed at just over 100,000 miles. My kid had over 160,000 trouble-free miles on her T-100, so I decided to give the Tundra a try.

BTW, the Dodge Ram that I looked at was only 60 percent US/Canada content, the Tundra is 85 precent, and was designed right here in California.

QUOTE]Seems to me the 4.6 doesn't come with 3 valves in the F150. I do remember saying the 5.4 was good. But if you think that 4.6 has torque you don't know what torque is. Look at the intake manifold on that thing. They try and compensate for that lack of torque with those giagantic runners to no avail. I've driven a 4.6 ford back to back with a 4.8 Chevy and there is no comparison. I even timed them 0-60; 10.3 vs 8.8, both extra cabs. [/QB][/QUOTE]

Okaaaay then! I don't know torque, you don't know engines I guess we are even. And yes the 04 and up f150 IS equipped with a 3 valve 4.6, 5.4 V8's, and 6.8 V10. If you want to do things like time trucks which I think should be done with cars instead why don't you put a 1000 pds of dirt in the back of them and we'll see who wins then.

Well if we're gonna go there might as well start talking diesel. Here's a couple REAL trucks, probably go for ~$12k and WAY better than anything you can buy for double that price new these days. Notice the sticker in the back window of the 2nd item, can't quite make it out, but I think I get the message. Wife probably wouldn't go for the stick or the noise and harsh ride (remember the OP!)

Show me where on this page the 4.6 has three valves. Towards the middle of the page it says "4.6L Triton® SOHC 16-valve V8". 2 x 8 = 16.

then it says "5.4L Triton® SOHC 24-valve V8" 3 x 8 = 24. Do the math
F150 specs on Ford.com

And yes I know engines. I've built my fair share of them. But better than that, I can read and do math.

For 2006, only the new Explorer Trac and Explorer are equipped with the 3 valve per cylinder, 292 (or so) HP 4.6 liter engine. The 4.6 liter the F-150 gets is still the 232 H.P. (approx...off the top of my head) engine. The new 4.6L should be transitioned into the F-150 in the upcoming model years.
