I am looking at adding a base work truck to the fleet. I am leaning toward the Base Toyota Tundra work truck with the 4.L V-6. Out the door this unit costs ~$16500 in the Richmond market (includes AC and AT).

Is this a decent deal, or should I go with a F150 etc? I will not use the truck for heavy loads but will use it to move around college students, and flea market furniture for the wife.

around here you can get an '06 Chevy/GMC V6 1/2 ton for $14,999.. that's what I'd buy (if were looking for a v6 1/2 ton).
 
I just bought a new Tundra at the end of February. I don't know much about their newer 4.0 V6 because I got the V8 with 5 speed auto. But so far I like the Tundra a bunch.

I was considering the F150 also as I think they are also a good truck. In the end I like the looks of the Tundra a little better than the newest F150 style. On thing I also noticed in test driving is the gearing seemed a little to high for my tastes in a truck on the F150s on the ones I test drove.

I've test driven the 4.0V6 Tundra with a manual trans and it actually drives really well. The power feels pretty adequate, which surprised me for a V6. It felt stronger than a F150 with a 4.6 V8. The small powerplants from Ford are a disappointment so I wouldn't even consider them unless it was $2000 less than anything else. They lack any resemblance of torque. I've put quite a few miles on them over the years in various platforms. Unless you get a 5.4 I wouldn't bother with a F150.

I also like the GM trucks. They look nice and have decent power in their small engines. Occasionally I see deals on them so maybe you can find a steal in a standard cab w/ a 4.8 V8. That would be my first choice. That would get the same mileage as anything else, if not better, and good power with no funky DOD (displacement on demand). I really like that 4.8.

But if you can get a good deal on the Tundra I'd say go for it. Its a nice driver, if nothing else they drive excellent. But if it were me I'd get the manual trans Tundra just because it shifts really nice. Since they are changing them soon, I'd grab it before they are all gone.
 
toyota's and honda's arenot all they are cracked up to be...better off with american truck (ford)stout parts and rear ends bullit proof drive trane..we have a ranch *** turcks don't even stand up to the task not even close...
 
I think the best Chevy dealer in the Richmond area is Heritage in Chester. It's on the corner of Route 301 and 10. Take I-95 South to the first Chester exit (61), go through the light at 301, turn right next light into the dealership.http://print2net.cnpapers.com/?showad=W712402 Here's an ad from a WV newspaper with a 4WD truck for less than they want for the 2WD Tundra. I have dealt with WV dealers before and they are easy to deal with. Usually no processing fees and an upfront deal over the phone that's better than anything you can get in Richmond. But anyway, if you are interested in GM, print the ad and see if they can match it or beat it. You should be able to get a 2WD for no more than 15,000.
 
I would choose the Tundra. Even if you don't keep the Tundra forever you will be able to sell it quite easily, unlike the mass quantities of beat up Fords that will flood the market.

Tundra is built in the USA.
 
I'd go Ford, but get the Superduty F250 with a 5.4 V8. Better looking truck than a F150. You can still get a manual trans (either close ratio or wide ratio) in the Superduty. AFAIK, you cannot get a manual in an F150 anymore (at least not in the year they came out). BTW, you probably will have to order the F250 if you want a manual. Seems in the city they only stock automatics.
 
I have had nothing but Ford trucks and they all served me well, I don't know what Huhwhye was talking about lack of torque, these modular motors have loads of it at low rpms espesially with the 3 valve ones. Now if you are talking about the v6's, I would agree the Toyota is the way to go, and you know you will get alot of miles out of it, their V8's are weak and get the same crappy mileage like the other makes.
 
I too would pick the Ford. You get a proven design and replacement parts are plentiful and relatively cheap. Trucks are what Ford does best. Why else do you think they are the #1 selling truck year in and year out. Plenty of old ones on the road are a testimony to that!

Well... basically because of the huuuuge amount of ford trucks that go to fleet sales. FMC usually offers the best rates to corporations. I agree though, love the new F150 on up.

Truthfully, all of the 1/2 ton trucks are pretty good. I think whatever you buy will serve you well. I'd test drive everything (F-150, Ram, Tundra and GM Silverado/Sierra) and see what you like best.

The F-150 probably has the most innovative features. They have stuff like tailgate lift assist, outboard shocks, roll down rear windows on ext. cabs (that may only be on the XLT and higher models though), quarter doors on regular cabs, etc... The tailgate lift assist thing is pretty cool...it makes it easier to close than the tailgate on my Ranger. The F-150 also has a really solid feel to it.

I think the Ram probably has the most flexibility with options. If you are really picky about what you do and don't want in a truck, I'd definately give them a look.

Ford, GM and Dodge all offer completely stripped down work truck packages too if you are not interested in carpet or cloth seats or anything. The packages are pretty much the same - blacked out grille and bumpers, vinyl seats, plastic floor covering, etc... and usually deduct $1000 or so from the base price. As far as I know, Toyota does not offer such a package.
 
I would give the titan a look.
U can usually get a base model for 19k before tax tag and title.
And the base motor has more power than the 150s 5.4 although the specs are very close on paper.

Drive them both back to back and you will understand.

Tell me who has more manufacturing in the USA. Toyota, Nissan, Ford, Dodge, or GM? I'll give you a hint....it AIN'T FORD!!!

I love the "Buy American" slogan. Just because they started in Detroit, most people have no idea where most vehicles are built these days.
 
$19K ? When I was looking for a truck I found a 3/4 ton 4x4 long bed regular cab with a tow and off road package, a 6 spd, and a high output Cummins for less than $23k. Dodge had a $2k or so incentive at the time so you might have been able to get it for less than $21k. That was 3 yrs ago though, and I don't look for such deals anymore.
