Who knows about Hyundai Engines?

Dominated by the M3?? It beats it by 0.1s. Does that fall into the "dominated category". I get a win is a win but come on.

I am not into fast cars or ever looked at HP so after you posted the M3 with less than 100HP and still beats the R-spec that made me look into it further. I looked up the 2012 BMW M3 4.0L V8 that has 414 HP @ 8,300 rpm. Huge increase over the older model you listed so I figured must be in 3.0s range.

But to my surprise a 2012 M3 with 414 HP = 4.8s 0-60. As I mentioned I am not into fast cars so can you explain why a new 2012 with almost 100 less HP is slower 0-60 than the 10 year old M3 you listed?

I guess I am still looking for almost any good running V6 that will easily smoke the V6 Genesis. I wish all of the numbers were easy to compile so we can see this but they must not be. I don't think anyone has listed any V6 that smokes it. Might need to define "easily smokes it" though. I don't consider 0.1 in that category.

Cheers,
Rod

0-60? No dude, look at the 1/4 mile times!

3 entire tenths, in drag racing, is HUGE.

And the Mustang is 3 tenths and 6Mph faster in the 1/4! That's a massive difference. That is indeed being "smoked", and smoked by a car with 30 less HP!

So while the 2011 M3 with its 414HP 4.0L V8 "only" gets from 0-60 in 4.6 seconds, it's 1/4 mile is 12.8 seconds at 111.2 mph. That is 2-tenths faster than the E46 M3, and 5Mph. And that is 1/2 a second faster than the "R-spec".

Here is what 2-tenths looks like:

I said I don't know a lot about fast cars. Since the OP's wife is going to drag race I guess he has found the car for her.

One question, why doesn't 0-60 mean anything? Especially since hwy speeds are pretty much capped at 70-75 mph.

Cheers,
Rod

Traction. 0-60 is dictated by traction for the most part. High HP cars that lack AWD have a LOT of wheelspin to control and so it affects how well they do.

The biggest teller in how a car performs in this respect is the 1/4 mile MPH, as it is indicative of a car's overall performance. The biggest detriment to MPH is going to be weight. You can have two cars run the 1/4 and one have a perfect launch, the other a horrible one, but if the one with the horrible run has a much higher MPH, it means it is actually making more power (or has a better power to weight ratio) and is simply less effective, either through traction, gearing, or driver ability (or the lack thereof) at putting that power to the ground.

That is why the Mustang is such a good example, as even though its 0-60 is worse, it is MUCH faster in the 1/4 mile, and has a MUCH higher MPH, meaning that with traction, it is only going to widen the gap in ET making the difference in overall power (including weight here) that much more apparent.

Thanks for that. I still don't know where all those advertised Hyundai horses are... keep looking!

The only cars that beat the Hyundai are the M3 and the Mustang...both much smaller & lighter cars! My Caddy has more power than my friend's Miata...but the 2000lb-lighter Miata is still quicker!

You forgot six year old Chryslers! VERY comparable in weight, too. And quit looking at ET's and focus on TRAP SPEEDS as those are not as affected by the driver.

BTW, it's not 370 at the wheel. Not even close.

The facts are there. Hyundai V-6's getting whipped by others with LESS HP. V-8's, too. Weasel all you want, but the numbers tell a story.

Hope to see one of these posers at the strip! A magazine headline won't help you there. It's up to your car.

Sorry to dredge this back up. It was a good read and I appreciate all the replies. This was a hard process for me. The car is for my wife she works hard and deserves a ride she enjoys. She does not care about speed, or even handling that much. Bottom line she approaches car ownership from a different angle than I do.

So I had to approach this buying process in a hands off manor. I did not go on any test drives, or offer to many opinions on the cars she was driving. She test drove many cars, Genesis, 300, LeSabre, Taurus, CTS, and CC (I think that is all of them). She drove most of them at least 3 times some a little more. I think she was making the salesmen crazy, eventually one dealer would just hand her the keys when she walked in. this process obviously took a few weeks, which I think is much different than most car buyers.

Anyway, in the end she ended up liking the Genesis the best. We got the 3.8 with all the options. I like it, but still prefer my truck

We just got it so I don't have any further opinions on it other than "it looks nice".

Just to point out that budget was a factor. For example to get a CTS with options we would like blew or budget up. So that was a mark against it. I think she would have liked the CTS otherwise. The Genesis cost us 37,300. before TTT From what I can gather that is a pretty good deal, at least according to true car.

Sorry for the ramble.

ET? Definitely! MPH? Nope!

You can have a car cut a mediocre ET and fantastic MPH because it was geared wrong. I owned one

LOL!

When they still allowed motorcycles to race against cars at Texas Raceway, I made several runs on my ZX600C against a built Buick GNX. I was running mid-high 7.4s and low 7.5s (1/8th mi - 670 ft above sea level)and beating the turbo Buick consistantly, but her trap speeds were significantly higher than mine.

That spoke volumes to me about how much horsepower she really had.

Hyundai owner here, a 2009 Sonata. Just to add my comments to some subjects above:

- Engine - I have no complaints about the 2.4 engine, only nag is some electronic throttle problems but that is engine control programming rather than a core engine issue.

- Transmission - it flares and thunks the 2-3 upshift multiple times per day, has done so since less than 400mi on the odo. Dealer says nothing is wrong.

- Paint - It is thin and chips easily but this is probably typical in the segment with all the brands in the past decade, I would not call it substandard.

- Suspension - comfortable, nearly boat-like but not sloppy in normal driving, however the front end clunks. Dealer says it is normal.

- Other - dreadful squeak from the windshield when temperature below 50f and dry outside.

I don't like how the TCC disengages on every little incline, with no throttle provocation. And around Kentucky it is annoying to use the cruise control on the highway because the TCC unlocks and transmission downshifts to 4th on most inclines. This is again a programming issue rather than a core component problem.

Hyundai USA never sent us any kind of satisfaction survey about anything - buying experience, service experience, vehicle experience - nothing. But they did send us a little non-slip Hyundai mat to put on the dashboard for gadgets we don't have, so I know they have my name and address.

Good review, but you do know that the WHOLE power train has changed right. I don't see how your opinion is relevant to new Hyundai engines, I've also owned two new Hyundai's in the last ten years and thought them mediocre at best btw. I wouldn't consider my relatively bad experience with Hyundai to have any bearing on the new generation of cars that they have put out, they share names nothing more.

Yes indeed. This is why seasoned drag racers are usually looking at trap rather than ET. Trap is remarkably revealing and is much more consistent and less skill-related.

If I know your weight, trap speed and density/altitude I can calculate the REAL HP very accurately.

I can't wait till those Genesis R-specs show up at the strip. No car rag headlines to help them, they must show what they've really got.

Good point, R2d2. Hyundai has revised many of their engines to also include GDI (gasoline direct injection) now. So we can't tell how well the new engines will hold up or perform over the years, but we can speculate based on their past engines.

My post was somewhat off topic. My point was I think their recent non-GDI engines are very good, but the rest of the vehicle may be questionable.
