Who knows about Hyundai Engines?

My wife is really liking the Hyundai Genesis for her next car and was wondering if someone could give me the lowdown on their engine lineup. She is a pretty mild driver so ultimate performance is not needed. So based on that I think the 5.0 is out.

That leaves the 3.8 V6 and the 4.6 V8.
We can get either engine and be happy. We tend to keep cars a long time so we would want the power plant that is proven reliable.

Anyone have anything good or bad to say about the 3.8L and the 4.6L ?

The 3.8L with DI is a recently revised power plant for the Genesis. I don't think there's anyone on the forum so far who has had personal experience with that engine, or any of the higher-end Hyundais. You're probably going to get a lot of heresay in the responses.

Amazing that you can speak for the 39,170 members of this forum. I have driven the 3.8 and owned the 2.5 V6 for 11 years. The 3.8 is plenty of car for her unless she is named Danica.......The 2.5 engine and auto transmission have been bullet proof. DI is the wave of the future. Don't believe anything I say so we don't upset the previous poster. Do your own research - there is plenty on the web. Hyundai is on a mission to prove there are for real. Those who knock them, refuse to face facts. Toyota and Honda had growing pains in the 60's. Hyundai had them in the 80's. Times have changed so have their cars.

I personally wouldn't worry about their engines. I would be worried about the transmission. I haven't seen one transmission from Hyundai last past 150k . Stuff changes and they are getting better but I'd go with a company known to be good. Also their paint is pretty ehh. I know plenty of people who go to wash it and paint comes off when the hose is to close The most recent was a2010 elantra. Also they have a good warranty except they like to find out ways to get out of honoring it. Wouldn't buy one personally. But I wish you luck.

I don't have any experience with the Lambda V6. But I just drove it's predecessor, the Sigma 3.0 V6.

My Mother In Law's XG300 has been parked in the garage for no less than 4 months. It started up. No jumpstart. Cranked a little slow but came to life on it's own. There was a little bit of a tick for a minute or so and then it was quiet. The gas in it has to be at least 6 months old. Ran smooth and accelerated as well as you can expect a car that size with a 3.0 V6 to accelerate.

The XG drives as well as any Buick Park Avenue I ever rented. It's every bit as soft and gooshy with the same "big American car" steering feel.

Of course this car only has about 45,000 miles on it. It's 11 years old.

You've driven the new 3.8 with DI or the outgoing port injected one?

I washed 126 Hyundai's today and they looked a little overpriced to me. The small cars in the same class as mine were very expensive. They looked a little cheap. The Big ones looked nice but still looked high in price as well. Besides that I dont know much else.

I find your comment about the paint a little off. I Own four vehicles (see signature) and hands down the paint-job on my 2011 Sonata is the best out of any of the vehicles I own. I keep up with my vehicles' exteriors and there is no question that it is the best, most scratch resistant paint out of the cars I have. It also is very nice when you shine it up. I also feel their service and ease of purchasing a vehicle was the better out of the four. I have not heard of excessive transmission failures either.

I would take 'em for a test drive and see what you think. Hyundai has stepped up to the plate and they are doing a good job especially with their newer models.

We have owned three Hyundai's, 2001 Elantra, 2003 Sonata & now a 2011 Genesis.

As far as motors & transmissions go the Elantra had 127,000 miles on it the day it was wrecked and we never had one problem with motor or transmission. A few electrical issues with windows & locks. Someone mentioned problems with paint and yes most of the early 2000 Elantras' had paint issues on the rear bumper, ours did. You can see a lot of them still on the road with the same bumper problem.

The 2004 Sonata has 181,000 miles on and has never had a motor or transmission problem. As before a few electrical issues but only with the locks. Paint on this car shows no signs of issues. I plan on keeping it another 100,000 miles.

Now to the 2011 Genesis. Mine is the 3.8 V6 but is multi-port injection and not the DI like the 2012s. We only have 15,000 miles on this car but have not had any issues. It is the premium package only. I didn't want the tech package due to more areas to break and expensive repairs... Premium package is very nice and I believe it is the quietest car I have been in. The suspension is a little stiff so be sure that isn't going to be a problem. The V6 has plenty of power. The 2012s have a new 8 speed transmission but I have the 6 speed.

If you want an extremely nice car without paying a small fortune go for it. I get a ton of compliments on the car and everyone who has ridden in it thinks it is very nice.

Thanks for the replies so far guys. She test drove a bunch of cars today and came home liking the Hyundai genesis and the Ford Taurus. She was really impressed with the Hyundai.

Good point. The 2012 just now coming in are GDI - but only the 3.8, the 4.6 is still MPI. The 2011 3.8 was also MPI. I have driven both 2011 and 2012 3.8 - test drives only. I have driven the 2.4 GDI extensively - relatives car who regularly gets over the 35 MPG rated even on junky CA winter gas. 2012 Sonata will be my next car based in part on stellar 2001 history.

I was going to say something similar but the XG300 was, at the time, Hyundai's Halo car. The pearl white paint is exceptional. What you would expect on a Lexus.

My much older Scoupe had good paint on the metal parts but the plastic parts were kinda chalky.

I suggest she take a new Charger (or 300) for a drive. If she likes the Hyundai 3.6, she will LOVE the Pentastar V6 and 8-speed transmission!

(Or the fire-breathing 5.7 Hemi!)

The older Hyundai engines are known to be practically bulletproof. I can't speak to the newer ones.

Nothing wrong with Hyundai engines. Other than the same woes that seem to affect EVERY DI motor.

But I have seat time in two different Genni and I came away unimpressed. IMO very poor suspension calibrations, both the 4.6 and the 5.0 Rspec had poor steering feel and some horrible crash on big bumps. Felt like an old truck with a bad front end. Tons of road rumble, just felt like they need some work on bushings and shocks.

Add to that that almost any good running V6 will smoke them easily. I just don't see the allure, other than super cheap pricing.

I guess this is why you take advice from forums with a grain of salt. I am not sure how anyone can compare a new Genesis with an old truck??? That might be the absurd thing I have read in a long time. I agree the suspension is stiff but there are some BMW & MB where the suspension is stiff but this is why I recommended you drive it to decide for yourself but it isn't like driving an old truck.

As far as "any good running V6 will smoke it easily", can you provide evidence?? Please post multiple V6 engines 0-60 time that back-up another absurd statement.

I guess you get what you pay for when you ask for advice.

Well we need a 4 door so the charger is out. She test drove the 300 already. It was on the list originally but she has now ruled it out.

She said she liked the way the one she test drove rode and she is the one that has to live with it so . . .

WRT being smoked by every other V6, Can I ask you, have you ever driven a Ford 500?

Uh, the Charger is a 4 door. The Challenger is the 2 door.
