Okay guys. I'm going bonkers trying to choose a oil for my 2010 GTI 2.0T DI. I know it shouldn't be this difficult in picking an oil. I will be doing 6 month OCI's. I will only put on 4K to 5K every six months. I drive 90% city driving, only 4.2 miles to work.
While I'm in warranty. I will be using a VW 502.00 spec 0w-40 or 5W-40 only. I don't want to run a 30 weight in this engine. I want to buy the oil locally, and not online with the super high shipping charges.
After doing countless research on VW 502.00 spec oils. There seems to be nothing special about Euro made oils compared to North American oils. I guess people think since it's made in Europe, it has to be better!
I will tell you this. I won't use Mobil 1 0W-40. I stopped using Mobil oils after they knowingly sent non spec API oils to the market after Katrina.
Here are the oils I can buy locally, and the reason I won't use them.
Lubro Moly 5W-40, $6.95 a liter, group III. Only meets BMW LL-98 and MB 229.3
Lubro Moly 0W-40, $8.95 a liter, group IV. It's only SJ rated, meets only BMW LL-98 and MB 229.3
Pento High Performance II 5W-40, $5.75 a liter, group III, It's a low SAP oil.
Total Quartz Energy 5W-40, $7.15 a liter, group III. I'm still up in the air with this one. It meets the highest specs BMW LL-01 and MB 229.5.
Motul X-cess 5W-40, $8.55 a liter, group IV. It only is SL rated, It only meets BMW LL-98 and MB 229.3.
Eneos 5W-40, $9.05 a quart, group IV, I can't find a data sheet on this oil.
Valvoline Synpower 5W-40 MST, $6.99 a quart, group III. It's a low SAP oil.
Castrol Syntec 5W-40, $5.35 a quart, group III. It's only SL rated, and only meets BMW LL-98 and MB 229.3.
Now the reason for my post. It has come down to two oils I will use. I can buy these two from the same oil distributor in town. They cost $4.81 a quart. They are both SM rated 5W-40. They have almost identical specs. They both meet SM, BMW LL-01 and MB 229.5, and Porsch A40.

So out of these two oils, with almost identical specs. Who has the better group III base stock? Seeing that ConocoPhillips gets their group III from South Korea, and Chevron produces its group III in the US. Does one of the them have a small advantage over the other? Or should I just pick the bottle with the prettier label, seeing they are both have silver bottles.
