Some people seem to suggest switching your brands around all the time can lead to the films built up by the previous brand being broken, resulting in higher wear levels.
I really haven't seen very conclusive data to demonstrate this, but its worth a moment of thought.
My suggestion would be to run a brand of oil for several runs at your chosen OCI, before switching, and see what performs the best under your circumstances, with UOA.
That said, however:
My '93 BMW came to me with a "mystery oil" used by the P.O's mechanic.
This was exchanged in May of last year with Mobil 1 0w40, after running it about 5K miles.
The M1 was exchanged early this year with Rotella T6, 5w40. The M1 was run just a tad over 7500 miles.
Have put about 2000 miles on this oil since, and in a month's time the car is seeing an indy shop to complete some work that is bordering on "overdue." (Not sure why it wasn't found at the last inspection 2, which happened right before I bought the car... Not going back to that mechanic, thats for sure).
So the car will see a synthetic oil, the shop I am using is a "Penrite-Endorsed" shop, although given my feelings towards that oil, I might ask for the M1 they offer, even though my engine will sound like a watch-factory afterwards...*
*Am hoping that replacing the lower chain tensioner will fix this problem.
Seems that the previous mechanic was using conventional oil on either his recommended 6200mile (10,000km) interval. P.O. ran by the lights, so in reality it could have been more. The switch to synthetic has shown up a valve-cover gasket leak, and the lower chain tensioner seems to be leaking a little too.
