I have a 2007 Dodge Grand Caravan. I see two filter options. One shows as the cross reference to the MOPAR, the other shows as the application to on Wixfilters.com. I am a bit confused as the differences between the two. Which one should I use? And why? Why the differences?

The first one shows

Which engine code do you have?

The 1348 is a small filter they used on engines like the DOHC I-4, and the 1085 is a large filter used on V-6 and V-8 engines.

Neither will seal correctly if it is not on the right engine. The 1348 is about an inch smaller in diameter than the 1085.

Take your pick. If you have room, go even bigger if you want.

Just about any 3/4-16 thread filter, with some exceptions AND accounting for any room limitations, will work for you.

The first is bigger, may flow better at start up. The second filters better (finer) according to the beta ratios you posted.
Maybe try a lookup on a 51516. It is bigger than the 51348 but has better beta ratios than the 51085, if I recall correctly.

river_rat, are you sure about the beta ratios? Gary????

Wix seems to flip flop with these two filters a lot. I had the opposite problem with my '05 4cyl. Caravan. The OEM crossed to the 1348 of similar size, but NAPA (Wix) catalog recommended 1085 for two years, than changed to the 1348. I went with the 1348 that matched the OEM better.

At the WIX site, the 2006 Grand Caravan lists the 51085. For 2007 it lists the 51348 for the same engine/engine vin code. Is there a clearance issue with the 2007 model? My choice would be to go with the one closest to OEM in size...just my opinion.

I would call WIX up and ask them to explain. Please share their answer with us. And.....this is why it is good to be observant with aftermarket filters. I had some similar issues with a Kubota filter.

Yes. If the data on the post is correct. Higher beta numbers = better filtration.
Simply put, 2/20=15/28 means that at 2 micron particles, 1/15th of them get through and at 20 micron particles, 1/28th of them get through

Well, the bigger filter has the better numbers. It could be because of the size difference for all I know.

Here you get progressively better filtering with a diminished rate of return.

Am I missing something? River_rat and Gary have different answers.

Someone please explain

Yes, according to WIX, the 3.3 uses 51348, however, when I take the MOPAR part number on WIX, the W0-90 or whatever the MOPAR filter is, which is the manufacturer part, Wix now says 51085. That is why I was confused. Why they say to use 51348 on the application look up, but then when you use the section to enter a competing part (Mopar) it says the other.

Here's how you read it rr

2=1/2=50%
20=19/20=95%

50% of the 15um (and greater) particles are filtered
95% of the 27um (and greater) particles are filtered

It could be expressed as

Beta15=2
Beta27=20
or
Beta2=15
Beta20=27

In most automotive filters the ratios are fixed while the particles are all over the place. Sometimes that fall into neat numbers like 15um Absolute (beta75)

Notice that the 2/20 is constant across most Wix filters
Notice that the x/xx is varied across most Wix filters.

Beta75 is 74/75th's efficiency
Beta2 is 1/2 efficiency
Beta1000 is 999/1000 efficiency

Beta(N)= N-1/N = efficiency at the specified particle level (and greater - an overlooked aspect).

Don't sweat it. Buy the little one ..and go buy a $2.47 ST8 when you get to Wally's ..or a FL300 MotorCraft ..or the '90 MOPAR ..and see if they fit. If they do ..and don't present any conflicts with the rest of the hardware ..aren't hanging so low that it will be hit by something ..USE THEM.

My son's NEON spec's the dinky filter. It can fit the FL1A/51516/PH8A/ST8 ..but it sticks down below the pan. So, it's a FL300/ST16/51085 .......or not.

Here's how I'm reading it, Gary:
beta.jpg

The first numbers are the micron ratings
the second set is the beta for the corresponding micron size particles tested:
e.g., 2/20=15/28
So, when in my post I said for 2 microns, 1/15th got through, I calculated it this way: 100-[(1/15)*100] which should be correct and correspond to efficiency.

Example: For a beta of 10 (for simplicity) calculated this way one gets 90% efficiency, which is the same as saying 1/10th got through the filter.

Sorry if I wasn't clear in my post.

My scenario is exactly like the neon's, and its interesting, because I used to own a neon. I know the filters fit Saturn/Neon. I have a 1348 on my car currently, but I have a couple 1516's that I'm gonna use over my next few OCI's. I checked all the specs, all the sizes, thread, o-ring, everything is identical to the 1348.

In short, if the caravan specs a 1348, the 1516 will work (Unless there are other clearance issues)

I know it's confusing. The first numbers are the Beta numbers used to express the efficiency levels on the right column.

2= 1/2= 50%
10 would = 9/10 = 90%
20 would = 19/20 = 95%
75 would = 74/75 = 98.7%
200 would be 199/200 = 99.5%
etc...etc.

..at whatever micron level that they're remarking on
(pulling numbers out of my behind)
Hence the 2/20 = 7/28 in the way WIX displays them would mean

50% of the 7um and greater particles and
95% of the 28um and greater particles

In the most accepted filtration nomenclature it would be

Beta2=7
Beta20=28

or long hand

At a 50% efficiency level, this filter captures 7um and greater particles under this ISO standard
At a 95% efficiency level, this filter captures 28um and greater particles under this ISO standard.

If the longer one is just longer but has all the same specs, and you have enough for it to fit on the car, then use the longer one.

It's this way with my 2004 Altima V6. Nissan and others (NAPA, WIX, etc) call for the short (2.5" long) filter, but the longer version (3.5" long) fits just fine.
