My friend has a 88 ford ranger with 300,000k on it and he was told to use staight 40w oil could some of the experts speak up and let me know what to tell him. [I dont know]

If he's burning a bit of oil he might want to go with a 10w40, but he's probably best to stick with one of the high mileage 10w30s, which are very thick 30wts.

Why not just 20W-50? Why is he being told this? Leaks? Wear consumption? Either way this is always a downhill proposition -to just use a "thicker" oil, if the car is mechanically ill. Eventually fix or throw away will happen, and going to a thicker oil sometimes will make wear worse (straigt 40W on a cold morning??) We need more symptoms or a true diagnosis.
