My friend has a 88 ford ranger with 300,000k on it and he was told to use staight 40w oil could some of the experts speak up and let me know what to tell him.

If he's burning a bit of oil he might want to go with a 10w40, but he's probably best to stick with one of the high mileage 10w30s, which are very thick 30wts.

Why not just 20W-50?

Why is he being told this? Leaks? Wear consumption?

Either way this is always a downhill proposition -to just use a "thicker" oil, if the car is mechanically ill. Eventually fix or throw away will happen, and going to a thicker oil sometimes will make wear worse (straigt 40W on a cold morning??)

We need more symptoms or a true diagnosis.
