Which one to keep?

I'd lean towards the Ford, but if I did lots of miles and objected to the fuel burn, I'd ditch both.

Why not keep both? Or are both rarely used yard vehicles, and you already have a daily driver?

If you are keeping for a spare vehicle the Ford might be more useful.

I like the Pacifica for its flexible design, but I looked into buying a used one and the research revealed a number of potential problems.

Probably to make the final decision it might be up to your own personal preferences and needs. They are fairly evenly matched in value, etc.

I already have one too many vehicles as it is, but I will soon give my Chevy truck to my son, who has just turned 16. So the one I keep will be rarely driven for a few months.

Looks like the old Ford is the popular choice. I think I might keep both for a month or so, and drive them on alternate weeks to give myself some behind the wheel comparison.

I really appreciate all the insight, thanks.

I think I agree with the general consensus.
If you keep one, Keep the Ford.
If you don't need an SUV, get rid of both and find something better suited for your needs.

Please post back when you decide and let us know why you made the final decision. Real-world experiences like these can be very helpful to others who might be considering the purchase of similar vehicles.

I would seriously unload them both.

No, wrong! The Expedition uses the AOD-E/4R70W, not the E4OD.

The 4R70W is a very good transmission (it is what is in the non tow package F-150 and the Crown Vic). It was the base transmission in the Expedition, with the 4R100 being the optional transmission that you got with the 5.4L and the tow package.

Id keep the ford. Aside the fact that I dont like chrysler, whats a few cosmetic issues on the ford? Put a little more gas in it with the $6k you get from selling the pacifica.

Rattle can the rims black, get a rusty old grill guard off an F150 and drive your expedition like a bawss.

Im not afraid to drive a "wimpy" looking car (pink tercel!) but I dont care for the pacifica :P

Being worth only $3000 is not a disadvantage to the ford, its the advantage. Would you buy another one with known history for $3000? I would. Thats why I sold my 2009 and drive my 2002 chevy purchased new, just hit 99k today! Worth $2000 but everything works pretty well.

I'd keep the Ford as well. I like the 4.6 engines and have found them to be reliable, even though they can be a little anemic.

The 4R70W was the entry level transmission, the E4OD wasn't used in the Expedition. The 4R70W is good with maintenance, but most went without.

I would keep the Expedition. Much more useful as a 2nd/3rd vehicle. Sell the Pacifica while it's worth anything at all, because that won't last. The Expedition won't lose much if any value between now and ten years from now.

Everytime I hear of a 4r70W failure, it's always in an 01'+ F150/Expedition. Neither my 97' or my 99' (5.4 2wd xcab Lariat) ever had a transmission issue, and that's after all the hard miles I put on them. Now my buddie's 01' 5.4 xcab 2wd went through three 4r70w's under warranty, and when I bought an 01' Supercrew 4x4, the transmission under it had a remanufactured tag bolted to it (it still never gave me an issue, but apparently the first owner had some).

Could be just luck too.

Once again thank you all for the replies. Quite a compelling argument was made for the old Ford, especially from Fordtrucktexan. As requested, I will update in 2-3 months and let everyone know how it sorted out.

I love the ride and luxury and the beauty of the Pacifica, but the Expedition does have more utility, and it will probably be cheaper to own. Its kinda really ugly though, LOL.

Check back in March or April! Thank you all!

Whelp, decision time has arrived...

As promised, here is how it turned out: We have to sell the Pacifica to cover the estate/probate legal expenses. So I am now driving the Expedition to work.

Its sluggish in stop-n-go driving, but I commute an 80 mile round trip down I-10 every day, so, its not so bad once up to cruising speed. I appreciate all the input, thanks guys.

Ouch, that will be expensive in gas!

....but I agree with the choice, the Ford is the better vehicle here.

Interestingly, it gets 18 mpg at a steady highway cruise, which is only 1-2 mpg less than the V6 Chevy truck I am handing off to my son. With the low gas prices, its been a breeze so far...
