Decided between these two oils to run in a 2021 Kona. I already use the 5w30 in a Tucson, but the Kona is the Turbo GDI. Thinking maybe the 40 for that. Or maybe the 40 for both? Opinions?

Both those are going to be virtually the same HT/HS so in that regard they are functionally identical.

The Castrol LL product has VW 504 00 approval and is a medium to low SAPS oil, that's the only substantive difference. It's what I'd use.

Both are Castrol, which one of the products you specifically referring to? The 30, 40, or both?

i changed it, is that better?
Yeah sorry I corrected my post. The Edge 5w30 LL with 504 00 approval. The 0W-40 product is high SAPS.

You can't find a less expensive 504 00 oil than the LL available at Walmart.com for $24.04/5 quarts. If you buy two then shipping is free.

They're both relatively close in terms of HTHS and the KV100 viscosities are probably within 10% of each other from what I can remember off hand, I'd use the LL 5W30 as it's mid SAPS oil should be nicer in a direct injected motor.

Yes, that’s where I have been buying it For the Tucson. I just wasn’t sure if the Kona turbo “needed” an extra viscosity boost. The manual says I can use a 30,40, or 50 oil.

Well you won't get it between those two. If you want that then something with a higher HT/HS would be required. But these with an HT/HS of ~3.5 is pretty good and there are few engines that would require more. I use the LL product in my new Tiguan and I think it's what VW used on my last free change.

What does the LL mean? I don't see it on the 0w20.

Isn't the turbo GDI engine the poster child for the LSPI problems? I'd choose an oil specifically designed to be used to deal with the LSPI. Neither of the two oils you submitted are noted for such. Dexos-1, gen 2 is a common specification as is the newest API SP.

I own nothing with a direct injected engine or a turbocharger so I'm just opining from the data that's out there.

I believe the higher zinc and phospHorus counts offset the calcium amounts that cause lspi. The added titanium does as well. Also, most lspi issues have been resolved in most newer engines nowadays in normal driving.

It should be the new Smartstream engine, I'm not sure how they are in terms of LSPI, but still it's a little 1.6L engine in a fairly heavy car so an LSPI friendly oil is probably a better idea, and being a new smartstream engine with dual injection at least it has some fuel washing the valves so high SAPS oil shouldn't be as problematic as it'd be in a purely direct injected engine, Pennzoil/Quaker State Euro 5W40 would probably be a better choice than these two oils although it's a high SAPS oil. If you wanna go Low SAPS there's Mobil1 ESP 0W30 and 5W30 that are MB229.52 so they have a high HTHS>3.5 and LSPI protection but it's usually pretty expensive.
