Which oil would you use in a 2.3l Ranger?

Castrol GTX or Motorcraft.

Will be doing 3k oil changes because I only average 3k miles per 6 months.

No havoline? Castrol at about 100k you'll dislike the resulting varnish - with Motorcraft you won't see the full benefits of owing a 2.3. MC is thicker where i've found out of the 2 Duratecs I have they prefer thinner oils. Mine also likes PP which with that mileage you should be able to get a year oci running PP. But that's a personal preference.

55 want to bet me on it? My dad changed his oil with GTX 20w50/10w30 on his Festiva every 3k and over 100k it was fairly heavy with varnish. To rule out the car itself i've used in several vehicles one over a period of 20k and all showed signs of varnish. We've stopped using it since but I think the damage is done on dad's car. He bought my festiva since it runs much better, GTX was never used in it. I'm not saying it will kill a engine though.

Regular Motorcraft changes and all seem clean at work to me. The ones that come in at 7-10K changes well not so good but 3-5 all look clean on the inside.

There are UOAs here that are buried - showing excelent wear rates with your engine using 5W-20 Pennzoil dino or syn-blend.

It's not nescessary but if you use your favorite brand, it'll be easier to stick with one oil.

Much like you or me, vehicles like to be fed certain oils. If you find one that keeps your engine quiet, clean & consumprion-free.... why change?

I am old-school with my oil choices & will stick to one brand if it has no issues. I'll find it on sale somehwere & stock up accordingly.

Too many times I've posts here at BITOG where folks move away from a perfect oil - something then occurs like noise, dirt or consumption -- they go back to their original oil next - but the non-consumption doesn't return -- just the cleaner engine and quietness returns.

You can roll the dice by purchasing "whatever" is on sale at the time of your OCI ... or do like me. It's your choice.

Eric, somethings wrong with the car because not every car varnishes with GTX. The vast majority are likely clean as a whistle, provided oil change intervals aren't excessive.

People say Pennzoil sludges and varnishes; not in the vehicles we have where it's been used for well over 100K.

Yeah ... this is the first I'm hearing of GTX varnishing.

As I stated it wasn't just that one car but many. All had the same pm's and 2500-3000 mile oil changes. Probably most would consider the engines to be clean, which it was, but I don't consider varnish residue to be clean.
