For the past 30k ive used mobil1 full syn 5w30 in my moms 06 taurus. Its due again for another oil change in 100 miles. Its got 152k on it. She does very short trips of 5 miles or less a day, this is y i use a full syn and a motorcraft filter. She has started to consume and leak a bit of oil and i was wondering if i should drop her down to a maxlife 5w30 or go 2 mobil1 high milage. Her oci is 5k.

While I know it's not the same car, it may run the same engine as yours - I drove a 2003 Mercury Sable with the 3.0 Duratec engine for about 5 years. I bought it with 75k miles and sold it with about 187k miles. I ran Valvoline MaxLife 5x30 in it for well over half of the time I owned this car, and it worked great for me.

Price is good, too. Use with confidence.

I use valvoline maxlife in my dads 99 crown vic but he is 80/20 highway/city and 144k on the clock. Mom just payed of her car loan this month on the car so its hers and she wants me 2 take care of it.

IMO.....I would choose M-1 HM....

It has a good reputation for stopping minor leaks and consumption. Use it with the From Ultra filter and it will easily do two OCI's (2 x 5000 = 10,000).

+1

This is my go to oil for most vehicles these days that have over 100k miles and are leaking or consuming oil.

+1 on the M1 HM.

Well decided to grab the maxlife syn blend and a motorcraft filter. Lets see how the oil loss does on this oil change if worse ill do mobil1 high milage.

Use a synthetic. Lots of people love Maxlife and is a great oil for hwy. Short trips are a bear on oil. How do I know. This has been my driving pattern for over 10 years. One vehicle went 5 years with steady diet of Mobil 5000 and Maxlife. The engine bit dust for other reasons however I could tell by looking through hole in valve cover the buildup starting after 30k. I now run 2 syn blend then 1 synthetic. I have now gone 33k on this used vehicle which I can't see how much build up there was or is so I just run good oil. First one was 68k when bought and 100k it bit dust. The current on was 83k now at 116k. Now Valvoline does have a Synthetic High Mileage with Maxlife in it that you might want to use.

Those are fairly tough. I've seen many with high miles ran on 5w20. I just bought one the other day that runs great, but needs torque converter. Im repairing it this weekend.

Those are great cars for the money. They all either strip the torque converter, blow the head gaskets, or have an oil pan gasket leak.

Besides head gasket failures the engines are pretty tough. any 5w30 or 5w20 and it will live a long time.

Oil pan gasket is seeping and shes got a lil rust on one rear wheel well. Other than that its been a good car for the last 5yrs 50k miles.

i love buying them with blown head gaskets, or stripped converters to fix and flip. ive flipped 4 this year.

You can pick up nice ones all day for $800-1K that just need a few hundred dollars of love, then its back on craigslist for $2500 the next week! i really do like those cars. easy to work on, and cheap to fix and own. The one i just picked up is a rust free 2003 with only 120k on it.

they are a little bad about rust on the rear quarters. I dont buy any from ohio for that reason, they all seem rusty. If i get them out of Kentucky where it snows less they seem more solid.

FWIW i always put 5w20 back in the ones i get.

If you're set on a synthetic, it sounds like Maxlife Synthetic is the way to go. I know Maxlife has a heck of a following here, and I'd probably use it if QS didn't make a HM oil.

Maxlife Blend (red bottle) - if it's already leaking, don't use any full synthetic. Unless top off is your idea of fun.
