I have a '01 GMC 1500 pickup with the 5.3L engine and 52K miles. Last year I drove it about 5K-6K miles. I've driven it 700 miles since I changed it 3 months ago. When I do drive it, I tend to drive it rather spiritedly(I like to hear my headers and Flowmaster:)). I want to do 1 change/year. Last year I ran Amsoil 5w30. I used Mobil 7500 when I changed 3 months ago. I'm loosing my confidence in this oil and want to change it out. What do you recommend? I previously tried Amsoil 5w-40 and it made my engine very noisy at start up. That's why it's not on the list. Keep in mind the low miles but spirited driving.
1. Amsoil 5w30
2. Amsoil 10w30
3. Amsoil S2K 0w-30
4. Amsoil S3K 5w30
5. M1 EL 5w30
6. M1 EL 10w30
7. Mobil 1 Truck and SUV

I've got a 2000 Silverado Z71 4.8l (same as 5.3 shorter stroke) with 41k miles (so we can tell it's not driven too much) and I change out the oil every 3 months no matter miles as Its driven short trips most of the time.

My Mom has a 2002 Silverado with same engine and it just turned 13k miles. Same OCI as above.

I don't think I'd go with a year only change.

I'm using conventional oil(oil changed with filter less than $7 each time, So $28 a year total for Oil and filters) and the used oil analysis have been good. In fact better than Mobil 1 that I used.

Had the Valve cover off due to a leak and it was spotless. No varnish or anything.

I know it's not on your list, but those are my thoughts.

Take care, Bill

I ran a 5300 for 5 years/100K miles in my 2000 Silverado. Poured Valvoline 5W30 in it every 3-4k miles.

Nary a problem. I think I would either use Valvoline Synthetic or Mobil 1 5W30 and change it once a year.

Sorry.

I was using Pennzoil Conventional then ran 2 OCIs with Mobil 1. After the UOA came back that Pennzoil did better than $4 a quart oil, I went back to the .69 cent a quart Pennzoil.

Tried Chevron for a couple of Oil changes and have been back with Pennzoil Conventional. Once my stash of Pennzoil is gone (in a year or two) I'll be running Chevron in it.

My Ford Taurus with 110k miles was spotless too. (I had the heads off twice) It was run from 21k till I sold it with Pennzoil.

Take care, Bill
