I am a fan of quality. I am running an Ultra now and love the filter, rarely any start up tick unlike some other filters I have tried. I just figured that during the winter flow might be of MORE importance than outright best filtration.


Start-up tick isn't a "flow issue" ... it's a leaky ADBV issue. As said before, "flow" is not an issue unless the filter is very clogged up, and since you change oil & filter often it's not a concern.

20 microns is 1/2 the width of a single hair standing on my arm. I can't see a particle that size doing any damage. And besides that, I gotta 50 percent chance of catching it.

Read this ... see the measured wear difference between a 40 micron filter at 98% efficiency and a 15 micron filter at 98% efficiency. A filter at 60% at 20 microns looks to be about the same as the filter shown as 98% at 40 microns (the Filter A in the Efficiency vs Particle Size chart).

^^^ Everything has a trade off. I can't see how you're gonna get good oil flow while catching 20 micron sized particles 100 percent of the time. I'd rather have the oil flow.

You can have excellent oil flow and be highly efficient at the same time, just like this. The full synthetic Ultra probably flows even better than this PureOne - which is rated at 99.9% @ 20 microns.

This is what a PSID vs Flow curve looks like for a very good flowing oil filter - in this case, a medium sized PureOne (PL14006) with only about 100 sq-in of media area. I doubt your car can put over 12 GPM of oil flow to the filter - probably more like 6~8 GPM.
