I sold my nice Honda self propelled mower when I moved - now need to buy a new walk behind, self propelled mower for 1/3 to 1/2 an acre of mowing - what would you buy?

Price range?
I would go with a Toro Super recycler or Honda. I wanted a mower that had the best mulching ability for St Augustine grass. I was able to find a lightly used Super recycler for a great price on Facebook marketplace a few years ago.

I bought a new Honda self propelled mower last year. I like it a lot and I'd do it again.

But hurry. Last year was supposed to be the last year for Honda gasoline engine mowers. There are likely a few around that haven't been sold.

Hmm. I'd probably try to find a nice, used, 2 cycle, aluminum deck Lawnboy because those things run forever.

But if I was going new, I'd go for a light, self propelled Toro. The lighter the better. Something capable of bagging. Steel decks are fine if you keep it clean.

I had a Honda pusher and I didn't care for it much. It was too heavy, and the self-propulsion was awkward to use. I sold it and bought a 90s model commercial Lawn Boy that I fixed up and use now.

Compare the mowers you’re interested in. I’ve owned the Toro Personal Pace. Loved it. Wore it out. At the time (Covid shutdowns) I could only find the Honda 21 inch with the ridiculous thumb drive, plastic toy wheels like on a toy Barbie car, and a plastic shroud in the deck that has distortion to the point of having to trim the pieces out.
The engine seems fine. Don’t try and mow unless your lawn is bone dry. The drive wheels will have zero traction. I have Bermuda grass in the ultra humid south so a bone dry yard is rare especially if you have an irrigation schedule….. These might be ok for a postage stamp yard that’s as flat as a pancake. I have a sloping yard. It’s a fight to keep the mower making straight efficient lines.

I'm a vintage Snapper push mower guy, so I'd recommend a 21" self-propelled Snapper - the real kind, not the rebadged Walmart stuff. Although now that manufacturing has stopped, those with existing units may not be selling them, they're that good.

What price range? I have a 21" honda 217 with the hydrostatic it is the way to go in a 21" honda. For larger area I love my Ferris FW15 32" with a 10.3 HP Honda engine but they have gone up a lot since I got mine.

If I had money I’d get something electric. 0 maintenance 0 issues with shoving it in the garage attic during winter. In my current situation I’d get something off fb

I have 60V Toro electric and it is simply a conventional steel Toro mower with electric power. I absolutely love the thing and it is a great finishing mower. But asking it to mow 1/2 acre is asking for frustration as you will need 2 or 3 batteries. It is slower than a conventional mower, does not bag as well due to lower RPM, and it will not do any more than 1/4 acre of St. Augustine or Bahia grass. The $300, 6AH 60V battery takes 3-6 hours to charge.

My Snapper Commercial mower with 190cc engine is as powerful as the 60V electric, but twice as fast and will easily mow a football field on one tank of gas.

Just keyed into your lot size specifications ... I would get a toro wide cut mower. Or the Ferris FW15. Expensive but the last mower you'd ever need to buy.

Up to a half acre is a big chore with a 21 inch cut.

Agreed...I like not having to spend hours mowing. OP said 1/3 to 1/2...even at 1/3 acre of actual grass I'd take a bigger deck.
