Which market leaders do you avoid, and why?

"Any shoe company that has "American made" prices, but no Americans working for it."

thats cause americans OWN it and charge you american prices cause they want to live the american way....farm it out to sweat shops in the jungle, who's the wiser?

Goodyear tires - overated
Honda and Toyota vehicles - boring to me
Linux - perfect server, however so-so and a time sink for the end user

Chain restaurants. I only go to them if I'm travelling.

I like local, mom & pop/locally owned retaurants. Better food, and it's like visiting friends when we go to eat. I like knowing people by name, and when they know me.

snip:

"all their speakers having plastic spring-clips say a lot...I've never seen a set of Bose speakers with real banana-plugs, or screw-down type connectors".

I guess you haven't seen many Bose speakers. My Bose 301's had screw clamps. So did all the 901's, 601's, and 501's I ever saw.

High end Hi Fi magazines don't like Bose? Wow, big deal, that will really keep me up nights ....

Wal-Mart and Goodyear tires are the top two on my list. Chain restaurants run right behind that, but it seems to get harder every year.

Happywith all my Sony purchases - trick is finding them priced competitively.

umm I avoid Colt Firearms, Buck knives, Gerber knives and the like. Better stuff if available that is far superior to the above list. I also don't like smith and wesson.

I also avoid WD-40 while just about everyone else uses it.

Oh and Harley Davidson Motorcycles.

Sprint for cell phone service. T-mobile is the best deal out there.

Remingon for shotguns since they have an obsolete safety.Mossberg has a batter safety. Glock makes a good product but now popular becuase they make a good product. Almost all major gun makers make a good product.

Major oil brands-Supertech all the way!

Electronics I agree and avoid sony. Toshiba is great for televisions great pciture and sound.
My samsung has good picture but terrible sound.

Basically if there is a generic food we buy it.I would never buy the "exspensive brand" so i would not know the difference.

Post cereal - too high of an insect particle count in their cereal. This was told to me some time ago by my girlfriend who was a summer student working for the FDA. Kelloggs is better. The sanitation in each plant seen during visits reflected these findings.

For other stuff I read Consumer Reports and look at the repair history. Features don't mean much if the unit is prone to crap out on you.

"You guys must have never heard a set of Bose 901's. "

Compared to a good set of Martiin Logan's CLS they sound like crap. Nice for 1970's technology, but crap in 2006.....

I don't buy anything Intel (work for AMD)
I don't buy WalMart, Target, Sams club
I don't watch any shopping channels
I don't buy anything advertized through e-mails--I stop buying things I used to purchase when they start advertizing this way.
I don't buy coffee.
I don't own a cell phone nor a pager nor a laptop nor MP3 player, or IPOD
I quit flying after 9/11 and remember the days before 1970s when we could run through air ports at night,....
I don't buy american wine--prefer Italian and German.

I forgot......NO FIRESTONE TIRES.

Too many massive recalls, going back over the last 30 years.

We used to joke that over at the Firestone store, they were having a "blow out" sale.

And to think that Firestone was QS-9000 compliant while making those tires!!! For those of you that don't know, QS-9000 is another level of bureaucracy (and cost) leveled onto the automotive suppliers to ensure product traceability and conformance to spec. What a waste of American resources!!

AOL (why in the world do people still use it, no longer market leader)
Windows (for server usage only, but not sure if you consider them market leader)
Ipod (good user interface, sound quality lacking)
Anything that uses memory stick
ViewSonic monitors (if you consider it "market leader")
Yahoo map, mail, and search engine (Google beat it in every single category)
Trico wiper blade, Fram oil filter, Autolite spark plugs, Raybesto brake pads, Gate belts and hoses, for the obvious reasons (low quality).

That is probably true, but if you look at their stuff they have more cereals with nuts and dried fruit than Kelloggs (all starch with new flavor/marketting). I think you will find more parasite in real crab meat than immitation crab meat in the same theory, but that doesn't means people prefer immitation crab meat.

Remington rifles - brazed on bolt handle, terrible safety
Ruger firearms - investment cast frames and recievers
Ford vehicles - very weak powertrains
Fram oil filters - premium price but made from cheap questionable materials.
