My car takes a cartridge filter and the the two i'm torn between are the new Fram Ultra or the new Purolator Synthetic. (both have wire backed media)

I can get either for $10.50 so price is not an issue, but which is a better quality filter?

The filter you're talking about is canister/spin-on. Either one is excellent filter, buy one you can get easily.

I'm not sure you can tell easily. Take a look at both and decide but, even a visual don't tell anything about the material but, how well the pleats are spaced and how the media ends are supported. My vehicle also uses a cartridge filter and I ended up with OEM, MC or WIX/Napa Gold. That decision was made 5 years ago and Purolator was having problems with their cartridge filters distorting. I'm sure that problem has been addressed long ago though. Ed

I don't have any vehicles that use a cartridge oil filter, but from what I seen and read hear, a company's cartridge filter doesn't always reflect their spin-on filters in quality or performance. Same thing pertains to their air filters in some cases too.

+1

I think you couldn't go wrong with either.

I've been a Purolator PureOne user for many years....but I am considering using the Ultra (spin on) for two OCI's in the future..... based on a Fram employee who posted here on BITOG recently. IMO, he made a good case for the Ultra.

My normal OCI is about 7500, and I'm of the belief that it takes about 3000 miles or so for filters to start filtering at it's maximum. Thus I'm considering go to a 15,000 mile filter (Ultra), and keeping it on for two OCI's.

Tough choice... I'm a bit partial to puro.. but fram Ultra are top notch filters also.

I'm glad to see wire backed syn media make its way to cartridge filters.

Obviously you should buy both and post side by side pics

:P

Fitment seems to vary alot with cartridge filters so it would be interesting if they are the exact same.

Depends on the application. If it's for a Japanese or American brand, they're rebadged Purolators, so made wherever those tend to be made. If they're for German cars, they tend to be made in Germany, and marked as such, with a different colour can and everything. The same thing applies to the Bosch filters.
