Which filter is best for my car and why

I have a 2005 Monte Carlo with a 3.4 L V-6. It has developed a lifter that partially collapses while shut down. When I tool it to the GM dealer for repairs they told me that the warrenty would not cover it because I was using a NAPA gold filter instead of a GM filter. From what I can find out the NAPA made by Wix is one of the top rated filters on the market. So what's the deal here on the extended warrenty?

I don't worry about the oil filter because with 5,000 mile oil changes the engine will usually outlast my ownership of the vehicle .I worry about the airfilter and its seal.

Stick with Synthetic media filters

1. Wix
2. Napa Gold
3. Carquest Blue
4. K&N
5. Mobil 1
6. Amsoil
7. Purolator Pure One

Find the sales.

Read the fine print in the warranty. What loophole are they trying to use that is there or is not there.

I think the FTC could get involved in this. Tie-in sales are not allowed. They would have to prove that somehow the use of that filter was not appropriate. (If it was the right filter and it is made for that car there is no way they could do that)

the thing I worry about with non-OEM is the seal blowing out or the filter vibrating loose causing oil pressure loss. I may be way of base here. I don't want to risk a $10,000 car to save $4 in a filter every six months.

Bingo....

If youve gone through the engine(camshaft) why cheap out on the oil filter??? Id go with syn media filters only, along with syn oil.....

The best filter for your car while it's in warranty is the oem filter with timely oil changes done by your dealer. Post warranty,I use M1 or oem filters.

But ..AFAIK, there are no OEM filter that are synth media ..at least across all applications that use that filter. I believe the UPFxx Delco was spec'd on the Corvette at one time. That is, if we're staying with the topic's intent, it's the use of non-OEM filters that produces the anxiety. The OP is being hornswaggled by the dealer. If this is a non-OEM extended warranty, it's a service contract that may have exclusions from the MM act as conditions may be spelled out in terms of specific performance by the customer.

After reading various internet articles and posts here my thoughts are I wanted a synthetic media filter... Right now I am using Mobil 1, BUT I will look at the Wix filters..

I would love to see Fleetguard stratapore in my size..

I'd stay with AC Delcos. They can be found ANYWHERE, are usually cheaper, and do a great job. If you were going for long drains, then I'd search for a synthetic media filter, but the stock AC Delco is pretty hard to beat, expecially for the price.

20 years ago when K-Mart carried the numbers I needed and regularly had 2/$5 specials, I used nothing else. Can't think of a reason not to. If I still drove anything that took a PF 52, likely I would still be buying them. I have never seen the PF 2244G cartridge for my 02 Ecotec on the shelf anywhere. The first time I changed the oil, Mr Goodwrench didn't even have one. He also hated to see me undertake such a critical task. It has been a long time I saw and of the PF 1177's my truck takes. Now, the ST 3950 is a thing of the past.

So, yes I like AC's, but have made do with what I find, mostly ST or Purolator.

Your just plain wrong. That's what oil sample testing will tell you. There are other factors as well as metal content such as H2O, and silica amounts in oil. I put 31,000 on my last oil change in my 4runner before the samples pulled indicated time for change and that was due to moisture levels getting toward the high side. The rest of the sample reading was in the normal and no need to change ranges. The car has 170,000 miles on it and I've never added oil except during a filter change (around 7-8,000 miles, or oil change.
