IIRC, my 1981 Honda Accord owners manual only allowed 10w30 up to something like 90*F and allowed 10w40 across all ranges.

I used Pennzoil 10w40 and never had a problem for 160,000 miles.

That's interesting; I wonder if it's because the 10W-30's of the day were only good up until 90 degrees Fahrenheit.

What's more interesting is my 1989 VW Jetta (gas) only allowed 10w30 and 10w40 up to 50*F, and allowed 20w50 up to 86*F, and over 86*F recommended ONLY straight SAE 40 or SAE 50.

I thought this was insane, but sure enough, the thinner oils would make the oil pressure warning lite buzz at me. So i ran valvoline AC 20w50 year round and had no problems for over 200,000 miles. I mean NO problems at all. The only thing i did was replace the valve cover gasket once at 150K. It wasn't leaking, rather just barely weaping a bit, but i wanted to play it safe. When i replaced it, the valves were all spotless. It never burned any oil, then again, even back then i changed it *very* often. I think there is something to be said for a simple 8 valve 4 cyl design.

When i sold it i had to really force myself to use something as 'thin' as 10w30 in my new mazda.

The company that rebuilt my Bronco 2's 2.9 V6 suggested 10w40, and recomended Pennzoil, but said to keep 10w40 in there.

That seemed very odd to use in a newly rebuilt engine, but then again we live in the "high desert" area of NW NewMexico.
