I worded my original post wrong. I was trying to state that the 2004-2005 Neon SRT-4 has a NVG T-850 trans w/Quaiffe LSD, which calls for ATF+4 & 4 oz of Mopar Limited Slip additive. The 2008-up Caliber SRT-4 calls for the same exact fluid, though their cars have a Getrag transmission in it. That's the similarity I was making.
Also, I wasn't aware that Synchromesh was considered a gear oil? According to the product data sheet, it says, "...is a manual transmission fluid..." Also, it's viscocity @ 100*C is 9.08, where as most ATF+4 fluids fall around 7.xx at the same temp. Not much difference there if you ask me. Also as far as I've read so far and have come to understand it, Chrysler used this fill as factory fill before they went to the universal ATF fill for all their transmission regardless of them being automatic or manual. I also understand that this was a move to cut down on cost and to simplify things on the assembly line.
As far as the engine oil goes and people using Mobil 1 High Mileage 10w30 in their NVG transmissions, I do know they are rated at a different temperature but people are having tremendous results with the oil and very reputable people who rebuild the transmissions are just amazed by the minimal wear exhibited by the engine oil in the transmission. Again, this is from what I've read from multiple sources and am just passing what I've learned so far. I don't see why/how this principle couldn't be applied here in the Getrag trans as well.
The only thing that would prevent me from trying different fluids is if the car was still under warranty. The sad thing is, is that the FM that Chrysler puts in has been linked to causing premature failure of the blocker rings in the synchros.
I ask again though, what type of synchros are in the Caliber SRT Getrag trans?
