I have been running M1 SUV 5w40 in my 97 Ram 2500 V10. I have a frantz tp filter where I just change the tp every 1500 miles or so.

Should I stick with Amsoil 5w40 or go back to 10w30?

The reason of my switch is due to me changing my other fluids(ATF, Gear, etc.) to Amsoil, so I thought what the heck, change it all.

If you have had good success with the 5w40 Mobil 1. Then stick with the Amsoil product. Though I do belive the 5w30 ASL will be less expensive than the 5w40.

It looks like the 5w30/10w30 is $70.20/case at the retail price, and the 5w40 is 76.20/case at the retail price.

I would also imagine that the 5w30 will give you better fuel milage than the 5w40.

Though in the end, it will really be a wash. It's really "your" choice as either one will work good

Thanks msparks,

What's the diff between the Amsoil XL-7500 and the normal 10w30? Price is about $.65 qt diff?

What's the diff between the M1 5w40 and the Amsoil 5w40 "European Engine Oil"? Still ok to use in my truck?

Still cornfused as to go back to 10w30 or just stay with the 5w40 when I switch to Amsoil... Hmmm...Such major decisions!

Amsoil XL-7500 motor oil are certified API SL and ILSAC GF-3 motor oils except for the XL-7500 10W-40 that doesn't meet ILSAC GF-3. Amsoil (ATM) 10w30 is not a certified API SL or ILSAC GF-3 motor oil however it is a much better product and far exceedes the weak (in my opinion) API SL and ILSAC GF-3 performance specifications. Amsoil XL-7500 is a group III synthetic and Amsoil (ATM) 10w30 is a group IV/V oil and also has a stronger additive package.

XL-7500 was intended by amsoil to be used primaily by their "quick lube" customers and as a result was only designed to last 7,500 miles or six months. Most of Amsoil's other products can last up to 25,000 miles or one year under ideal circumstances. Amsoil (TSO) 0w30 can last up to 35,000 miles or one year under ideal circumstances.

Your truck is long out of warranty so I would suggest that you use Amsoil ASL 5w30. Amsoil ASL 5w30 is thicker than most XW-30 motor oils with an HT/HS viscosity of >3.5 cSt. I would only use 5W-40 if you are having a problem with oil consumption.

API SM and ILSAC GF-4 are major upgrades compared to earlier specifications. I am sure that Amsoil XL-7500 and all of Amsoils other motor oils still exceede the latest API and ILSAC specs but perhaps don't exceed the newer specs by as big a margin as before.

Amsoils products other than their XL-7500 line contain more phosphorus and as a result can't meet the latest chemical limits for phosphorus but should protect as well as or better than most over the counter API oils.

I am not trying to sell Amsoil here, just answering the question in the original post.

I need to make a correction to my first post on this topic.
quote:

Amsoil ASL 5w30 is thicker than most XW-30 motor oils with an HT/HS viscosity of >3.5 cSt.

The HT/HS Viscosity is 3.5 cP @ 150°C, (ASTM D 4683).

The time to correct my original post has lapsed.

So you think the regular Amsoil 10w30 is best? I think that's what I got from your post...

Thanks!

ATM is just the product code. Amsoil 10w30 for the $ has shown great results. Far better deal then their 0w-30.
