Which 5W-20 for Auto-RX?

I'm still not convinced. I agree that a full synthetic should not be used, but junk, not for me. With a good blend like Motorcraft you just run a little longer on the cycles, 2k vs 1.5k. Maybe Frank can chime in on Monday. I just don't want a crummy oil in my engine no matter how little time it's there. I'd even be willing to step down to Mobil 1 if it were not so expensive, but for 5w-20 I'd take MC.

To answer LT4 Vette's question: I haven't bought the car yet, so I won't have any "before" readings. As soon as I get the car home, I will dump the oil, and add ARX.

Thank you everyone for the help.

I have decided to run Pennzoil Platinum 5W-20 as the clean and rinse oil. It is a Group III oil; and in other threads, Frank himself has said it is OK to use.

Since two bottles is 24 ounces, and the 3.7 quart sump of the engine would only require 8 ounces per cleaning cycle. I plan on running THREE clean and rinse cycles, with 2,000 mile cleans, and 2,500 mile rinses.

I know it is warm now, but I worry about cold weather and dino oil. I wouldn't be done with my treatments until spring, and there is NO WAY I am going to run a dino oil in the winter in Ohio.

Had I bought the car in april or may, then cheap Supertech 5W-20 DINO wouldn't have worried me as much.

thanks.

There is NO problem with 5w-20 in Ohio winters. Remember the day after the Super Bowl this year? It was -18F here in lower Michigan. The Taurus fired right up with 5w-20 dino Havoline with NO noise.

Unless you bought your PP for .99 a quart, I'd say you are wasting your money using it for ARX clean/rinses. Even then, I'd still use cheap ST, QS or Valvoline and save the PP for longer runs.

Civics are great cars.

I just want to warn you that the 2001 Civics are known for strut failures. Make sure you inspect the struts before you buy that 2001 Civic cause replacing them is a bit expensive.

If your car jumps all over the road after minor bumps / turns - bad strut. Look at the "column" inside of the springs - if you see oil, they are definitely bad.

I just changed strut on my Prizm - decided to go to junk yard take entire assembly for $19.67 so I do not have to monkey around with springs (easy to take your head off without spring compressors). Took me 10 minutes to take off and 15 minutes to put on "new to me" struts.
