I offered to do an oil change on my son-in-law's '01 Nissan Altima. Before I embarrass myself I need to know where the filter is located and how difficult is it to get at?

It is a PITA. Back side of the block, above the half shaft, near the passenger side tire. It is a long reach from the garage floor. Prepare for oil going everywhere, there is no easy mess free way to do this. And you will need a filter cap style remover, there is not much room to get a strap wrench up in there. Make sure you put rags above the half shaft bearing, you do not want spilled oil attracting dirt and grime.

If there truly is Karma, engineers who design setups like this or the one on my Ranger should have to spend eternity changing the oil on their handiwork.....

I changed it on my friend's 2002 altima. you might have better luck turning the wheel all the way to the left and going at it from the passenger side just behind the wheel vs from front of car.
I took a handful of paper towels and soaked/directed the flow
its hard not to get it everywhere.

I agree!!! Dumb engineers, they need to experience some of their designs sometimes. In the Altima, turning the filter 90 degrees so it is vertical, would make many people very happy.

I did one on a 2000 Altima about 5 years ago and I don't remember it being that difficult. Then again it was on a lift at work.

But I have to agree that the Ranger V6 setup is terrible.

I did one at work, but can't remember if it was the 3.0 or the 4.0.
There was NO easy way to get at the filter.
If I remember correctly it was on the driver's side of the truck, and I had to reach through or around the fender liner.

Amen to that! I don't do my ranger anymore. I take it to the shop and let them glare at me every time I show up.

My Camry on the other hand. Sooo easy. Just put on a glove so you don't burn yourself on the mani and you're good.

The location of the oil filter on the 2002 is different than on the 2001 (Altima, Generation 3 started in 2002). As said above, the location on the 2000 is on the backside of the engine, under the intake manifold. Only way to get to it is to get the car up pretty high in the air and from under the back of the engine. Please be careful supporting the car and getting under it.

This is why I now use K&N oil filters on my 01 Altima. The nut on the end makes it easier to tighten when installing and remove that hard to reach filter. Still spill oil all over the place, but easy to turn.

I didn't really have too much trouble getting to the filter on my '98 Altima with the same engine your '01 has (the KA24DE). It's right above the passenger side CV-axle if I remember correctly. I used a plier-style wrench to get it off.

the filter on a 05 sentra is in the same bad place. i had to jack the car up support the car then go in and get it. mike
