Where does XOM procure GTL used in its newer formulations?

The full PAO M1 oils are:

EP 0w20
AP 0w20
0w16
Racing 0w50
Racing 0w30

I'm not sure about the ESP line.

All others appear to be PAO/GTL/AN.

AFE = vanilla. MSDS doesn't mention the word AFE for 0W-20 and 0W-30. Nonvanilla 0W-20 and nonvanilla 0w30 are the ESP versions.

I think most Mobil 1 oils are still mostly non-GTL Group III (the non-GTL Group III Visom or some other non-GTL Group III base stock).

It looks like unlike GTL Group III, non-GTL Group III doesn't always show up in the MSDS. If you look at my table, you will see that most percentages don't add up to 60 - 80%. The remaining base stocks must be mostly non-GTL Group III. The additive package (detergent inhibitor [DI] package) is around 20%.

These are the base stocks that don't show up in the MSDS:

Non-GTL Group III (sometimes shows up, sometimes doesn't)
Ester (POE) (never shows up)
Alkylated naphthalene (AN) (never shows up)

According to the FTIR oxidation numbers, all FS and ESP Mobil 1 oils (Euro Mobil 1 oils) contain ester (POE) at 5 - 7%. They don't contain alkylated naphthalene (AN) according to FTIR spectrum.

According to the FTIR spectrum, all or virtually all non-Euro (non-FS and non-ESP) Mobil 1 oils contain alkylated naphthalene (AN). The percentage of the AN base stocks are unknown but the high-mileage Mobil 1 oils seem to have more AN. It's possible that some viscosity grades of the M1 AP, such as M1 AP 5w30 are mostly AN because AN has excellent cleaning ability (solvency) and oxidation stability, which would explain why M1 AP does so well in turbocharger and oil-life tests despite having very little PAO and no GTL content. The FTIR spectrum would provide an answer.

The viscosity is determined by the number of carbon atoms (C18-C50) AND in the molecular structure such as: branched, cyclic and linear.
