Korean design has atrocious bouts of sickness, which explodes like a bad rash. Before the current one, the last one was with things that (fortunately) didn't make it to the US at all for the most of them - aside from the 1999-2001 Tiburon (the one with the four round lights that looks like it started to melt, somebody realized and quickly pulled it out of the oven, and then put it in the fridge as-is.
But outside of the US, the World was subjected to atrocities such as the 1st Gen Ssangyong Rodius, Ssangyong Actyon Sports, that have scarred countless souls who can no longer unsee them.
This always happens when they get a sugar rush after a long flat. Then comes the sugar crash, then they calm down till the next time. Like the abovementioned Tiburon - the first one was an "Eh...", the 1999-2001 was a "Huh ?!?", then the subsequent ones were an "Ah!" and a "Aaah!"
Then they have long bouts of healthy eating and clear goals, and come out with real elegance, such as most of the early Genesis...esses ? Genesises ? Genesii ? Well. The Equus when it came out, the Genesis coupe, the Santa Fe XL (the DM series as a whole), etc. Then they get sick with hubris again.
The current Kona (2024 and up) is, to me, clearly affected by the same design virus as the early Ssangyongs. I wonder if one of the kids of the original designers drew them. While in dark colors the Kona can hide its insanity, there are some contrasty combinations where the line is clearly visible (from 3/4 back view) between two parts (top and botton) of two different cars, that have nothing to do together. It's like someone cut the top half of one car and slapped it on the bottom half of another one. Especially visible around the rear wheel arches. Look at the Rodius from the early 2000s and you'll see the same discrepancy - a car cut horizontally through the middle, top removed, then a different one added.
And we haven't seen half of it - there are Kia designs (K-something) that just came out which are absolutely atrocious (checked it - K4).
At the same time, the second to last (and the current) Sorrentos are stunnigly beautiful, the just revealed new Seltos is like a baby Telluride. A lot of design schizophrenia going on there. Let's not forget the ancient Chinese curse: "May you live in interesting times".
