Where did all the Kona’s go?

The last generation Hyundai Kona was a very popular car in my area. The pre refresh was everywhere. The post refresh not so much. Then Hyundai jumped the shark with the larger, uglier new generation. I just don’t see the latest gen on the streets. I guess people took their money elsewhere. I actually crossed shop the 2020 Kona and liked it back in the day. Do you guys see the latest gen Kona in your area?

If I had to guess with how many engines Hyundai replaced I wouldn't be half surprised if they ended up overseas

If I lived in the mountains I would have a turbo or supercharged car. The 1.5l Equinox turbo we rented while in Colorado Springs was great. Plenty of power even with 3 people and luggage it was more than capable.

people buy based on monthly payment. and on the lower end, you got the Venue like someone said.

And with the current gen. Tucson on the older side, incentives + stretching the duration of the loan = Tucson payment competitive with a Kona payment.

so many peeps likely buying a Tucson after showing up to look at a Kona

My parents had a 2021 Kona and a salesman at the dealership cold called them a few weeks ago. They went in to check it out….had no intention of buying but the deal ended up so good they traded in for a 2026 Kona.

They seem to like it quite a bit more. Larger, easier to get in and out of, much quieter, smoother…

I haven’t seen a lot of them on the road yet.

The 2025 Hyundai Kona looks like a Mitsubishi design to me. Horrible design. Hyundai and Kia used German designers for the last 10-12 years. The 2018 to 2021 I see German. While someone here posted the new (wood tick Kona) was possibly designed by a German or it could of been a guy from Spain, I can't remember. I say no way. Hyundai and Kia's car designs went in the toilet. While they may still have German designers, I would say they don't have top level designing implementation power. I see Asian designers in their cars in 2025/6. Maybe not the Santa Fe, I see more German in that one. I don't see a German going with a "triangle" door design element like a lot of Hyundais have from 23-25. For me, that seem like Asian Sheek.

Korean design has atrocious bouts of sickness, which explodes like a bad rash. Before the current one, the last one was with things that (fortunately) didn't make it to the US at all for the most of them - aside from the 1999-2001 Tiburon (the one with the four round lights that looks like it started to melt, somebody realized and quickly pulled it out of the oven, and then put it in the fridge as-is.

But outside of the US, the World was subjected to atrocities such as the 1st Gen Ssangyong Rodius, Ssangyong Actyon Sports, that have scarred countless souls who can no longer unsee them.

This always happens when they get a sugar rush after a long flat. Then comes the sugar crash, then they calm down till the next time. Like the abovementioned Tiburon - the first one was an "Eh...", the 1999-2001 was a "Huh ?!?", then the subsequent ones were an "Ah!" and a "Aaah!"
Then they have long bouts of healthy eating and clear goals, and come out with real elegance, such as most of the early Genesis...esses ? Genesises ? Genesii ? Well. The Equus when it came out, the Genesis coupe, the Santa Fe XL (the DM series as a whole), etc. Then they get sick with hubris again.

The current Kona (2024 and up) is, to me, clearly affected by the same design virus as the early Ssangyongs. I wonder if one of the kids of the original designers drew them. While in dark colors the Kona can hide its insanity, there are some contrasty combinations where the line is clearly visible (from 3/4 back view) between two parts (top and botton) of two different cars, that have nothing to do together. It's like someone cut the top half of one car and slapped it on the bottom half of another one. Especially visible around the rear wheel arches. Look at the Rodius from the early 2000s and you'll see the same discrepancy - a car cut horizontally through the middle, top removed, then a different one added.

And we haven't seen half of it - there are Kia designs (K-something) that just came out which are absolutely atrocious (checked it - K4).

At the same time, the second to last (and the current) Sorrentos are stunnigly beautiful, the just revealed new Seltos is like a baby Telluride. A lot of design schizophrenia going on there. Let's not forget the ancient Chinese curse: "May you live in interesting times".

The new KONA has 2 shutters that open and close in back of the bumper . When they're fully open it looks like a possibility for something to hit the radiator .
